I'd love to see a study that looks at people who have accumulated 1,000s of plays with short-form games (ex: poker) where you play multiple discrete instances per play session, and compare their gaming opinions to folks who mostly just play long-form, cumulative-progress video games.

No one took me up on it last time but the offer remains open; if you give money to Mara, tell me about it, and you can claim a free copy of any of my games, supplements, or unhinged WIPs.
OK! Starting an official "let's get through December and then as long as we can" drive. I'm asking for a starting goal of $2K, which will cover my rent, utilities, a portion of meds, and a cushion for a bit. If you can help, I need and welcome the help. Tipjar can be found here: ko-fi.com/jazzelves

current minor conundrum in my wip ttrpg is that it's cool for mages to have staves and whatnot so i want an in-universe reason that's desirable but also for good gameplay it needs to be important enough to be motivating but unimportant enough you don't turn into a commoner if you lose it

so has this one gotten big enough we can officially refer back to it as the Nonmagical Rogues Discourse, or...?

This feels like kind of a non sequitur because the problem here isn't the mechanics, it's the terms of discussion. If course there's nothing special about mechanics when talking about them in a white room devoid of context, but mechanics when implemented don't exist that way.
Game mechanics aren't that special.
There is nothing inherently better about rolling 2d6 vs a d12, rolling over or under a stat for a skill check, or using tokens.
The special part is when you, the designer, noticing how a particular mechanic lets you share a part of the human experience

it is CRIMINAL that the new pokemon game introduces a guy whose entire job is to return lost poke balls to you but they didn't take that opportunity to bring back Ball Guy from galar

Here's hoping this and yesterday's post can clear up enough headspace to get me back to working on my WIP TTRPG.

Threw together this deck just now after blowing pack points on a second Mega Altaria. Only tried it twice so far, but it feels good.

This really is the thing.
Because the early games played well enough to attract fans of the gameplay, but then that gameplay degraded over the years as the focus shifted. Gameplay fans lost something while their design-fan neighbors ate better and better, but to grieve is to be labeled a hater.

Pokemon is basically a thing Nintendo does where once every couple of years they release a new set of character designs and I get to enjoy cute fanart based on these character designs for the next two years. Allegedly, a video game is somehow involved somewhere

I am once again considering framing all the different playable bodyforms in my WIP TTRPG as "types of elves," with "elf" being the umbrella term for sapient people.
Like, if we're already calling the genre "elfgames," might as well lean into it, right?
