Today is World Anaemia Awareness Day

#Anaemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells is lower than normal.
This means less oxygen than normal is being delivered throughout the body.

Globally, 2 out of 5 pregnant women & young children are affected by anaemia bit.ly/3YIYfL8

New in #VoxSanguinis!

A study compares 3 dried plasma products, showing fast reconstitution (<10 min, <5 min with practice) & normal clot formation. Packaging in plastic bags was a key user preference.

An experimental comparison and user evaluation of three different dried plasma products
Background and Objectives Access to blood components in pre-hospital bleeding resuscitation is challenging. Dried plasma is a logistically superior alternative, and new products are emerging. Theref...

PRICE-2 trial out @LancetGastroHep :
Hypovolemic phlebotomy (7-10 mL/kg) versus usual care for liver resection w high risk of blood loss.

Primary outcome: blood transfusion
—> Phlebotomy 8%
—> Usual care 16%

Severe complication rate similar (17% vs 16%)

Hypovolaemic phlebotomy in patients undergoing hepatic resection at higher risk of blood loss (PRICE-2): a randomised controlled trial
In patients undergoing liver resection, hypovolaemic phlebotomy reduced perioperative red blood cell transfusion and improved operative conditions, with no statistically significant increase in the incidence of complications compared with usual care. Hypovolaemic phlebotomy should be considered for routine use in patients undergoing liver resection at higher risk of bleeding.

Authors from Oslo gave D+ blood to non-child bearing age pts and found 1/5th alloimmunized, of which 1/5th evanesced. Saved many D neg units

The main issue is many places (incl 🇨🇦) lack federated/integrated antibody databases. Pts show up with unknown (evanesced) abs and suffer harm #transfusion
Transfusing selected RhD negative patients with RhD positive packed red cell concentrates resulted in lower frequency of anti‐D development and saved almost two thousand RhD negative concentrates during 5 years
Background The Blood Bank at Oslo University Hospital implements restrictions when the stocks of blood groups O and A RhD negative packed red blood cell concentrates (PRBCCs) drop below 60 units due...

Like many studies of massive hemorrhage protocols (MHP) and viscoelastic testing (VT), this one shows:

1) VT reduces blood use
2) VT increases fibrinogen use

This jives with real-life experience that fibrinogen is often unchecked or forgotten during MHPs

Background The resuscitation of trauma patients with critical bleeding may follow a formulaic approach using high ratios of blood components or a viscoelastic haemostatic assay (VHA) guided approach...
