What journalists can learn from how we covered the attack on trans rights in Trump's first 100 days.

Big takeway: based on analysis of a representative sample of articles, 70% of news stories about anti-trans executive orders didn’t quote a single trans person.

A few years ago, I wrote about why we should understand the Supreme Court as a kind of national defense agency—anticipating the erosion of constitutional rights.

Sadly, that argument has only become more urgent.

I’m now expanding that analysis into a longer journal article.
Two years ago, I wrote a brief piece for @truthout.bsky.social, arguing that we should view #SCOTUS as a national defense agency that has consistently worked to enshrine and defend white nationalism since its inception—a trend likely to intensify under Trump.

Since its inception, the court has operated to enshrine whiteness as the normative baseline in constitutional law.

In case anyone needs a reminder, Chicago doesn’t play.

We are the only city that forced Trump to cancel his presidential rally in 2016.

We also pushed out Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and Attorney General Anita Alvarez.

Send the Guard, and watch what happens.
A president mobilizing the Guard to respond to a situation, however, is rare. In January 2017, President Trump threatened in a tweet to “send in the Feds!” in response to violence in Chicago. Ultimately, he didn’t.

“This isn’t a coincidence. It’s the result of federal policy choices — most immediately, sweeping job cuts across public-sector agencies where Black women have long held the strongest foothold in middle-class employment.”
300,000 Black women have left the labor force in 3 months. It’s not a coincidence.
For decades, the public sector has been a lifeline for Black women shut out of economic opportunity. It’s no surprise that Trump's federal downsizing targeted them first, explains gender economist Kat...
