Interesting new article that fits nicely within "The Building Blocs" research agenda (t.ly/us7kj), which we recently contributed to: t.ly/Dg6zK

We, as scholars of Europe, can learn from scholars of MENA, SE Asia, etc, who have long emphasized the role of civil society for party competition.

🚨 Confessional Illiberalism w @lenkabustikova.bsky.social 🚨
We searched for a piece like this as scholars of extremism in CEE that might help students (but also other readers) understand the current "illiberal moment"—its variations and adjacent concepts. 1/5

This is a really important paper in the debate about optimal Social Democratic party strategies and the type of policy positions that are needed to deliver a "progressive majority". A must read!
New article out in World Politcs. We analyze how different groups react to varying programs of social democratic parties. We find less trade-offs than often assumed. Generally, more left-progressive programs increase support among social democratic potentials

🚨🚨 Accepted yesterday! 🚨🚨

@lenkabustikova.bsky.social and I introduce the concept of "Confessional Illiberalism" and distinguish it from two other forms of illiberalism, reactionary and prejudicial illiberalism.

We also compare the concept to other '-isms' to tidy the backsliding literature.

I just presented my paper on copartisans, state resources, and vote buying in Poland at RSA CEE 2024. I got some great feedback on the role of career concerns and party associations that I will definitely incorporate in my future drafts!

You have likely heard of the “dictator’s dilemma,” in which repression reduces knowledge of discontent and thus loosens an autocrat’s hold on power. But is the dilemma real? And what do dictators do to ease it? We have an answer.
