Centered triangular numbers are the number of dots in images such as the one below.

The nth centered triangular number equals 1 + 3n(n + 1)/2.

New post on the 100% Christmas Interval -- after almost 8 years, it's time that we finally talk about CIs.

A shibboleth is a custom, such as a choice of phrasing, that distinguishes one group of people from another. The term goes back to the Hebrew Bible, in which the inhabitants of Gilead identify members...

Hellinger and Wasserstein are the two main geodesic distances on probability distributions. While both minimize the same energy, they differ in their interpolation methods: Hellinger focuses on density, whereas Wasserstein emphasizes position displacements.

This is an incorrect calculation of the area of a triangle by a young Babylonian student at school around 1900-1600 BCE, excavated from the ancient city of Kish.

It’s a moment in the history of math, of education, of children, of mistakes, of people being people. I love it.

People like to post these fun inequalities in desmos that make wild patterns and it's really fun to add your own parameters with sliders!

In my opinion, this is why it makes sense for N to start at 0. Z^+ is a natural way to represent positive integers not including 0. I’ve seen some things use Z^{>=0}, but that’s inelegant.
But we’re never settling the natural number debate, haha.
If I want to represent an element within the set of all positive integers including zero, is there a preferred notation? I can easily come up with several:
n ∈ {x ∈ Z ∣ x ≥ 0},
n ∈ {0} ∪ N,
n ∈ {0, 1, 2, 3, ...}
Of which non feel particularly elegant.
