Preparing to embark on my family ancestry tour of the Northeast with excitement and sadness. Is this country no longer what our forefathers envisioned as "We the People"?
After months of careful research and planning, I am preparing to embark on a Northeastern road trip focused on family ancestry and the vibrant fall colors. Initially, my primary goal was to visit the places where my ancestors, who first arrived in the late 1600s, lived and contributed to the development of our country. I wanted to experience firsthand the towns and landscapes that shaped their lives and, in turn, our nation’s history. As the departure date approaches, this journey has taken on a more profound significance for me. It is not just about connecting with my lineage or enjoying the natural beauty of autumn. I am compelled to acknowledge a sense of urgency and sadness, fearing that this may be my only—and perhaps last—opportunity to witness the spirit of America as it once was. The idea of Americans coming together to oppose monarchies, dictatorships, and fascism feels increasingly distant in our current climate. I do not make these observations lightly. I believe that the democratic experiment envisioned by our forefathers, composed the Constitution starting with the words "We the People," was meant to include everyone, regardless of birthplace or lifestyle. The government was established to serve its citizens, but I feel this promise has been overshadowed by the interests of a wealthy few seeking greater power and control. The lessons of our past seem to be slipping away, and I am left questioning whether we have learned anything from history. While I do not presume to have answers to these challenges, I strive to make my voice heard, supporting democracy at local rallies. This trip, therefore, promises not only excitement and education but also a sense of sadness and bittersweet reflection. I am left wishing for a different era, one where the ideals of unity and democracy are truly honored and upheld.

Not by violence, not by the abuse of governmental power, nor by acts of corporate cowardice. As a Guild, we stand united in opposition to anyone who uses their power and influence to silence the voices of writers, or anyone who speaks in dissent. If free speech applied only to ideas we like, we needn't have bothered to write it into the Constitution. Finished up a fantastic weekend of Sacramento Open Studios #Sacopenstudios. It's like the Amazing Race to see all the independent artists across the town. Reconnected with many familiar faces, and made several new artist friends this year. Witnessing the development of artist's talent is awesome!
