I wonder if the United States can learn anything from the last time a major industrialized country decided to isolate itself from the rest of the world?

Almost a decade after the Brexit vote, GDP in the UK is around 6-8% lower relative to peer countries. (Source: www.nber.org/papers/w34459)

Amazon Prime Video is going from 3 minutes to 6 minutes of ads per hour.

While this is far less than the 15 minutes of ads per hour on TV, it shows the relentless march of enshitification of streaming video isn’t stopping even when you pay $8.99/month.
Exclusive: Amazon Doubles Ad Load on Prime Video
The move could lower CPMs but potentially hurt performance.

If Obama had accepted *a ride* on a luxury airline provided by an Arab government it would have been a massive scandal
I invite you to imagine the national meltdown that would have attended commander-in-chief Barack Obama accepting a luxury airplane from an Arab government
How can this obvious act of bribery be legal, you ask? How is this not impeachable? WH says it’s not bribery bc it’s not in exchange for something, and it’s not emoluments bc it’s going to the Air Force, not to Trump. 🤯

One of my clients said "they send basically college-age kids out to assess our engineering department. They don't even have engineering backgrounds, and didn't understand anything we said. But I guess they'll determine if we're efficient and if we have jobs."
A fired fed talking about DOGE, quoted by @marcfisher.bsky.social: "They did no assessment of what works. They didn’t ... find out what made the most sense to cut. They’ve damaged agencies so badly that now they can say it’s not working. Maybe that’s what they wanted all along.”

🧵 THREAD: A federal whistleblower just dropped one of the most disturbing cybersecurity disclosures I’ve ever read.

He's saying DOGE came in, data went out, and Russians started attempting logins with new valid DOGE passwords

Media's coverage wasn't detailed enough so I dug into his testimony:

I don’t use the “fascist” term often or really ever, as to preserve its meaning, but what the United States Government is embarking on with the El Salvadoran prison camp is simply that. It’s an affront to the rule of law, the Constitution, and centuries of Anglo-American constitutional development.

One thing re: the visa revocations and attempted deportations I haven’t seen addressed is the retroactive application. I know courts say noncitizens may not have the same 1A rights, but it’s crazy that a new admin. could just decide that legal speech/protest from the *past* now gets you deported.

It is hard to express, without resorting to expletives, how utterly stupid it is to suggest that the United States, world's richest economy with a population of 334 million, should have a bilateral trade balance of zero (no trade surplus, no trade deficit) with every country in the world.
I want to note again how completely insane you have to be for your goal to be a “bilateral trade balance of zero” with every country. Just nutso.

So just to recap:

1. The reciprocal tariffs aren't reciprocal. The rates announced by Trump are unrelated to the tariffs charged by other countries.

Imports from Brazil, which imposes relatively high tariffs, will face lower rates than countries that impose little or no tariffs on US goods.
