Meet Syn57, a living cell that only needs 57 codons, not the standard 64. Here's my story on how synthetic biology is tackling the mystery of our bloated genetic code. Gift link: nyti.ms/3Hf4f9v
Scientists are Learning to Rewrite the Code of Life
In a giant feat of genetic engineering, scientists have created bacteria that make proteins in a radically different way than all natural species do.

The diversity of bacterial defence systems against phages (restriction endonuclease, #CRISPR, phage protein
sensing system (RexAB), cyclic oligonucleotide-based (CBASS), ADP ribosylation (DARTG)) is simply fascinating, and we continue to discover new ones !!!

Just learned that Frank Stahl (of the Meselson and Stahl DNA replication experiment ("the most beautiful experiment in biology") died at the beginning of April, to no fanfare. Here's a lovely video of them reminiscing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-tn...

Happy to share the peer-reviewed and updated version of our work on OrthoRep-driven evolution of aaRSs for genetic code expansion with unnatural amino acids. Congrats to Yuichi Furuhata, a true master bioengineer, on leading this excellent work! www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Directed evolution of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases through in vivo hypermutation - Nature Communications
Genetic code expansion (GCE) enables the incorporation of new amino acids into proteins. Here, authors demonstrate the rapid OrthoRep-driven evolution of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases for GCE, increasing...

From launching young careers to launching experiments to space, NSF fuels America's excellence in scientific research and generates new knowledge for the entire world. But it looks like it's about to all come crashing down.
Exclusive: NSF stops awarding new grants and funding existing ones

I just called my senators + rep with a modified version of this script. Even living abroad, if you are a US citizen you're required to pay taxes. These disruptions mean your money isn't funding cures + climate adaptation. You don't have to be a scientist/researcher to call to say you're concerned.

Whether you get voicemail or staff, be polite and brief:
- This is [name] from [city], zip code [NN]
- I'm an [NSF/NIH] supported researcher
- I'm very concerned about disruptions to grant review and research at NSF and NIH
- NSF and NIH help fund [students, research benefits, health security ...]

Y'all: This is devastating for universities. Imagine you have a colony of research animals and can't re-order the food. Or you are a grad student on grant funding who lives paycheck-to-paycheck (also know as a student on grant funding). wapo.st/4gfgcHQ
