Loved this newsletter edition. It was very entertaining and also dove into TimberBiel and Costner shenanigans (separate). Sign up for their newsletter! There’s a free tier, but the paid ones are very reasonable.

Space missions are still going, because celestial mechanics wait for no man. Europa Clipper flew by Mars on its way to Jupiter and got some great science data. The spacecraft will get to Jupiter no matter what. Here's hoping there are still workers on Earth ready to discover what it finds there.

All the data from Mars Global Surveyor and all of NASA's other deep-space missions was bought and paid for by the public. Collected, validated, processed, and analyzed by federal workers or researches funded by federal grants. And is archived on public servers maintained by federally funded workers.

Two years ago, I discovered a love story hidden within Scott’s last Antarctic expedition—between two of his officers, Pennell and Atkinson. They survived the tragedy which took Scott’s life and shocked the world, but further dangers still lay ahead for them.

The fatality rate for bird flu in cats is staggeringly high (up to 90% depending on the study).

Outdoor cats are at highest risk.

Keep your cats inside. Don’t feed them raw food. Keep them away from birds (especially water birds). Wash your hands thoroughly if you’ve been in contact with livestock
New Jersey reports H5 avian flu cluster in cats

The cats had no known exposure to infected poultry, livestock, raw milk, or raw meat, but roamed freely outdoors where they may have been exposed to wild birds or other animals.

Bears repeating that social security is incredibly INCREDIBLY efficient to run. Its overhead costs are basically zero when you consider the size of the undertaking and the genuine benefits delivered. If anyone was interested in improving govt efficiency, the SSA would be their model not their target
Just some general guidance here. We don't know all the details. But this presages taking a real hatchet to the whole social security system. Whether it's 20% of the staff or 50% who knows. But basically unsustainable cuts for a program anyway we've known it.
Here's the memo that went out short time ago from SSA HR announcing "organizational restructuring" of Social Security admin. essentially one last chance to quit before you're all fired. talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/memo-...
