I have DNF'd only one book and it generally shocks people lol. No Country for Old Men.

I acknowledge McCarthy was a driving force in writing but I couldn't get past his choice to forego punctuation/dialogue markers. Got sick of re-reading passages 😅

When an author makes the protagonist gaze in the mirror and describe in detail her pouty red lips, ice blue or chocolate brown eyes and shoulder-length jet black hair... I know the rest of the book will suck. Let the reader use their imagination. 🙄 #booksky #writinglifemonthly

Time for Week Two of #WritingLifeMonthly November.

"Witch Hat Atelier Peppermint Patty". Sounds a little...cottagecore? I'm not good with genres. I'm also not good at reading (or watching) things for the first time. Maybe it's my autism, but I can take months, even years of dancing around...

Animal cruelty. Graphic violence that is gratuitous and/or just for shock value. Bad writing and/or editing. No likable characters.

There is really nothing specific. I will sometimes just lose motivation to open a book again. OTOH a book can have typos, poor grammar, bad spelling, faulty plotting and still be interesting, entertaining or speak to me in some way.

Outside of bad editing and writing (i feel that’s a deal breaker for most people), for me a huge NO is poor quality sex and meaningless violence. I’m fine if it’s there but ya gotta make me feel something and justify its existence.

Distractions, things that force me to set priorities over reading, my migraines, and yes, bad editing. I've tossed both Twilight and 50 Shades of Grey because they were written so poorly.

I DNF a few times a month, usually within the first third.

Sometimes I stick out a book that I don't like just to see where it's going, but mostly I'd rather just pick something else and move on.

Almost nothing, tbh. I always plow through to the end, even if I hate myself for doing so.

I will say if there’s on-page sexual assault, that’ll get me to stop. But I try to avoid even starting those books if it’s mentioned in the content warnings.

It really depends on the book, but in general book length can be a factor for me to dnf. Some stories need to be long and others just feel like the writer didn't know where to stop #writinglifemonthly

Annoying and/or uninteresting main characters, total lack of plot, no editing, boring writing style, bad punctuation or grammar, weird or fucked up events happening seemingly for the sake of being edgy, when the MCs have a bad attitude for no reason… The list is long. 💀 #WritingLifeMonthly

The last book I DNF was actually a non-fiction book on extinct birds wherein I felt the writer was too blinkered and self-indulgent to actually put together a compelling narrative about a topic I am deeply invested in! So I guess I would say self-indulgence... 1/2

In the first 3 chapters of an #mmromance the author introduced a lot of characters with similar names. I almost DNF, but the premise was compelling. Decades ago I read Tolstoy's *War and Peace* -- so many characters! The translator provided a secret decoder chart in the back to keep track (whew!)
