Hi everyone

I was denied entry, detained, and deported from the USA over the last 48 hours because of my reporting on the Columbia student protests

I arrived back in Melbourne hours ago and had my phone handed back to me upon landing

BREAKING: Judge Richard Myers rules that the N.C. Supreme Court's handling of the state supreme court election violated the U.S. Constitution.

The win for Justice Riggs, a Democrat, is to be certified.

Today's ruling stayed for 7 days for Judge Griffin, a Republican, to appeal "if he so chooses."

I read The Listening Society, and am still thinking about it a few weeks later; would recommend.

My initial reaction was "interesting framework/ideas; skeptical the author has the answer", but I'm now intrigued enough to read the next book and hear their case.

The cruelty is intentional.

This point should be clear to all, but goes against the (normally helpful!) presumption that most people are good, so bears repeating.

The cruelty is intentional.

Yet somehow even stupider: Brexit was legally mandated.

This is just the wims of a 78-year-old.
it's wild how similar to brexit this all is. rushing to put together new trade deals on the fly. disorganized. no real plan.

ICE can enter anyone’s home, and abduct and deport them to a foreign prison indefinitely because the DOJ says they can ignore the 4th, 5th and 15th amendments.

If there’s no due process or protections against illegal search and seizures, none of us are safe.

We tried deep-sea mining in U.S. waters already -- back in 1970 -- off the South Carolina coast.

Scientists returned to the undersea site in 2023 to see what it looked liked now. One told me: "It's like they were there yesterday."

Foul weather rained down as Chris Garside looked out across Charleston Harbor’s choppy waters. The British oceanographer needed to get offshore, quickly. A local fisherman stood ready to ferry him...

Again, no. The Framers anticipated & feared tyranny in all its forms. What they did not anticipate was that Congress would be full of cowards who cared so little about their own power that they would let a runaway Mad King steal it without even lifting a finger to stop him.

The Framers feared tyranny of the majority. They didn’t anticipate tyranny of the minority.

Jerusalem Demsas speaks with a political scientist who explains why American democracy can be so easily hijacked by organized minority factions.

Think those 'Abolish ICE' folks might’ve been onto something
1. Jose Hermosillo is US citizen who was wrongly jailed in an immigration detention facility for 10 days

The administration says he "turned himself in" to the Border Patrol and told them he was a Mexican who crossed the border illegally.

I interviewed Hermosillo.

He says the government is lying.

Disappearing people.

This is not the country I grew up in–and I’m not going to let it be the country I leave to my children. I will continue speaking up because it is clear this is a constitutional crisis and being silent is being complicit.

Shrödinger's Visa
The bit leading up has to be seen to be believed. ICE erased students from the official foreign student database and told them to leave the country.

When Banias and others sued, ICE said nothing relevant had changed and the students could stay. Maybe? Or maybe not. Who knows? Not the government!
