I was helping a friend clean up the Amnesty International table at Lalopalooza in 1994. We were carrying chairs back to her car, and pushed the elevator button. The elevator doors open, and inside is George Clinton and a whole bunch of P-Funk All Stars. George stepped back so we could get on.

People need to be crystal clear about something: The requirement that the government ANSWER to a court on the legal basis for detaining someone is literally the core liberty right (habeas corpus). If the government says they don’t have to do that bc “national security,” YOU can be disappeared.

The institutions of the American economy depend on the institutions of American democracy; rule of law, consistent regulation, stability, and all the rest.

That’s what’s being destroyed and that’s what risks the *entire economy.

Saying that out loud shouldn’t (and can’t) be a risk
The whole thing is important, but listen until the end: the US depends a lot on the flow of capital into the country because it is perceived as the safest port in a storm. Once that is no longer true, a lot of things Americans take for granted go away.

Not sure how many Fintwit people are here, but the SEC's loss in the case challenging the dealer rule is pretty amazing. Not sure what value there is in forcing all investment managers that sometimes make two sided markets register as dealers. Seems silly. Would have had lots of bad consequences.
