George was a great guy. I vividly remember meeting him at a mixer at the IUCr meeting in Seattle in '97 when I was a grad student. We had an hour long conversation about SHELX and crystallography and other things over beers. Both a deep thinker and down to earth guy. He leaves a big impact.

Fun fact about George Sheldrick: he wrote a paper on his SHELX software (that everyone uses for small molecule crystallography) in Acta Cryst A which caused the journal to go from Impact Factor 2 to an IF = 50. Spawned discussion on the relevance of IFs. Huge impact.
We are saddened to hear of the passing of George Sheldrick. A dedicated professional with a distinguished career, his work and leadership touched countless lives. Our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time. Remember George with us: bit.ly/3QtoTUy

Interesting riff on science inspired by a story about Chappell Roan. I like it. Equally good food for those:
1) quietly struggling to find the motivation to keep going with their science
2) ignorantly raging about the process and taxpayer value of science
