Hay mucha gente en Latinoamérica que aspira a vivir en Miami o en un simulacro convincente de Miami. Creen que convertir sus repúblicas en colonias gringas será la forma de lograrlo. Pero por cada Miami, hay varios skid row.

Lots of horseshoe discourse right now about the Mamdani/Trump meeting and grinning photo op, but people have to remember Trump is an idiot who’s incredibly susceptible to charismatic people who wear suits, and at some level, its good that the president doesn’t hate the mayor of the US’ biggest city

It’s essentially an emergency that you see One Battle After Another in the cinema immediately. Sean Penn will win an Oscar & it has the best car chase in many years. And those aren’t in the top 3 best things about the film. Jesus shitting Christ.

We at The Steady State have studied the indicators of authoritarianism for decades — usually dry words in intelligence reports. But sometimes, a single photograph says it all.

Authoritarianism doesn’t arrive all at once. It creeps in under cover of “order,” cloaked in uniforms, justified by fear.

Sometimes I’m dissuaded from telling people on the internet to “get a real friend” because it’s a really mid insult, and if taken earnestly it’s almost inciting weirdos to harass some innocent barista who is contractually obliged to be nice to customers

How will 16 inch guns fare against swarms of drones and hypersonic anti-ship missiles?
Trump: "I think we should maybe start thinking about battleships, by the way. We have a Secretary of Navy who came to me, 'cause I look at the Iowa out in California and I look at different ships, the old pictures. I used to watch Victory at Sea. I love Victory at Sea. And I look at those ships... "

WW2 ended with unconditional surrenders, and the almost complete dissolution of the previous government structure of both remaining fascist aggressors, and this happened precisely because the allies agreed that there would be no partial surrenders or side negotiations.
JD Vance: "This is how wars ultimately get settled. If you go back to World War 2, if you go back to every major conflict in human history, they all end with some kind of negotiation."

The extremely simple fact is that Jeff Epstein was the most notorious child sex trafficker in history, and the President of the US was his close personal friend for decades

Acting like this is complicated is absurd. The man knew what Epstein did, didn't care, and participated

I think materials science is the limiting factor for a lot of tech. For example, steam engines were invented thousands of years ago but only as toys, because the metals used to make useful stuff like trains or water pumps weren’t developed yet. So a materials science 101 textbook lol
What’s the simplest non-gun technology you could give the Romans that would still totally reshape the course of global history? I feel like telegraph would do it probably. Maybe steam trains.
This is the truest thing I have ever seen. You cannot imagine how much the Romans would have lost their minds for excel. They literally already started writing our historical chronicles in synchronized columns *by hand*
