(On the Marjorie Taylor Greene resignation) Of course she knew that was a possibility, and it informed her timing. We know this because the day she has announced her resignation will be effective – January 5, 2026 – is exactly one day after her Congressional pension fully vests, entitling her to roughly $140,000 a year and full medical benefits for the rest of her life. That's pretty good work for a hateful and dumb-as-a-post Cross-Fit instructor from Georgia who never had any interest in actually governing. But nothing about Greene or this whole episode justifies praising her for even a millisecond. She's been a horrible, divisive, and hateful person and her leaving office is an objectively good thing.

If Trump has been right about anything, it is that there is a deep rot in the upper echelons of American society, among people who have been put in positions of power and leadership. Trump understands that many of these people are weak, that their public commitment to civic principles can crumble under sustained pressure. In many cases, those folding have had ample resources to resist Trump’s shakedowns but haven’t been brave enough to do so. They are, in a word, chickenshit.

Dems backed Trump into a corner where he’s advocating for starving Americans and hemorrhaging support. If they vote to let him off the hook in exchange for nothing it’s a cataclysmic failure. I know people are in pain but insulating Republicans from political consequences is not the answer.

Right wing political commentator Charlie Kirk was shot while appearing at an event at Utah Valley University yesterday. He was struck in the neck. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, but as anyone who was unfortunate enough to see the video of the shooting knows, his death was inevitable the moment the bullet hit him. He was 31 years old. Violence – including political violence – is always bad and it is always wrong. I hope it's not controversial for me to say that, but I truly believe that it's bad. I believe that it's bad no matter who commits it and no matter who the victim is or what the victim has said or has done in the past. It's bad even if, as was the case with Kirk, one makes it one's life‘s work to vehemently argue in favor of a deeply racist politics of which violence was both an essential part and an inevitable and desired outcome. I know that we're not supposed to mention any of that because it’s not seen as polite or respectful, but Kirk himself abhorred the very idea of empathy and I believe that nothing honors the dead more than honoring their truth. Violence is the antithesis of the sort of civic democracy which is already under attack in this country. It's bad because violence begets more violence, taking us even further away from those virtuous civic ideals than we have already strayed. It's bad in this particular instance because those who align themselves with Charlie Kirk are fascists who will no doubt use his murder as an excuse to incite and inflict even more pain, suffering, and persecution upon those whom they see as their enemy than they already are inciting and inflicting. As my friend Andrea Pitzer said yesterday in the immediate aftermath, "shooting Charlie Kirk was never going to help anyone except those who are already trying to destroy the country." She's right about that. Indeed, I suspect a great many of the people who are trying to destroy the country view Kirk's killing as a gift in this very regard. I truly do hope that Charlie Kirk rests in peace. A peace he'd never allow or abide, in life or in death, for those whom he made it his life's work to slander and attack.

The only thing I want to hear from elected officials or candidates is that, the moment they possess the power to do so, they will hold Trump and his accomplices responsible for their rampant lawlessness. It's a litmus test I will 100% apply regardless of who it is. This is a pass-fail test.
