this is correct www.cartoonshateher.com/p/im-a-food-...

I like it when food is good, but I will trade quite a bit of quality for an anxiety-free experience. I want to relax, not to have to make choices, not to constantly monitor & respond to etiquette questions.

it's good giraffe but the Halo Master Chief costume has a little more attention to detail

impossible to pass by these and not be overwhelmed by the intrusive thought that yes, I want to smell like that old man

this is an interesting chart I stumbled across: www.reddit.com/r/EffectiveA...

I don't think this is the right metric, exactly. but it is true that mosquitoes have 2x the neurons of shrimp. plants react to damage w/ stress responses. etc etc

my ANC helpfully defining one pole of the "symbolic & ineffective" >> "calculated and unsatisfying" political spectrum. this is a totally appropriate thing for them to do imo. where other levels of government should sit on the spectrum is a matter of opinion

good grief, the EO *specifically restates the expiration date*

I genuinely do not see how you can consider the Post's claim that this constitutes "welcoming" an indefinite presence to be in remotely good faith

a vast but entirely different set of systems has begun telling me about the opposite condition

Can’t pretend I’ve seen more than my commute since getting back to DC last night but the only noticeable change is a massively larger police presence by the WH for no particularly obvious reason. Can’t recall them shutting down even the sidewalks on H St before.

I'm sorry to be so worked up about this. I've been thinking about Karon Blake's dying words a lot in the year since it happened. It happened because carjacking is an entrenched fad among DC kids.

I don't want these words in my head. I want Karon to be alive.

this genuinely is the problem, but he's arguing implicitly for denial: given the lack of solutions, optimal comms is to deny that there is a problem

I understand this is the playbook everyone has selected, & some believe it. I don't think the public will buy it, even if it were closer to being true

my various complaints about DC government aside I am proud of our city for spending aggressively on social support services. I have had family members in crisis benefit from these programs (and recover!)
August 12, 2025 at 9:10 PM
making it harder to get to Butterworth's sounds absolutely a-ok to me but as a DC resident I can assure you we spend a lot of money on social services and that these issues did not start in January

they are extremely hard problems to solve. neither side's easy answers work very well.

similarly self-congratulatory shit like this, as if cities haven't thought of outreach teams before www.nyc.gov/site/dhs/out...

I don't know how to achieve it either but it really would be good to have fewer people hooked on toxic street drugs, driven to psychosis, dying on our streets

Ok you have to admit this is getting funny (Applebaum has lived in Poland since 1988?)

Oh whoops shared the traffic robot kicker too early (ATE is amazing). Here’s SS numbers

Not the best format for sharing but here’s some for-instance numbers from a spreadsheet I have lying around

worth noting that the arrests per officer took a dive & hasn't recovered (at least as of the piece from @dccrimestats that included this graph, he's stopped writing since) which plausibly exacerbates the situation

worth reading through his archive, tons of interesting stuff

yep

I think there's plenty of reason to believe this'll end w overbuilt infra but model efficiency is improving rapidly, making it genuinely hard to know where things will net out (to say nothing of uncertainty re eventual utility of LLM apps) www.wing.vc/content/plum...

in DC the bus lanes often have sharrows fwiw but I'm sure it's different in other cities

I was already dismayed by the prospect of the robot that kills me having been made by a guy who wears hawaiian shirts. this does not improve matters
