If you take the time to read the whole Gates memo (which I did), the bulk of the content was mostly solid and encouraging. Really!

It was the FRAME that was off--very off, from the first line.

And when your framing is off, then how you make decisions and set priorities is off. THAT'S the problem.

NEW: Hundreds of NASA employees have filed a letter of formal dissent.

"We are compelled to speak up when our leadership prioritizes political momentum over human safety, scientific advancement, and efficient use of public resources. The consequences for the agency and the country alike are dire."

This important paper passed under the media radar. It analyses a key indicator of the stability of the Atlantic overturning #AMOC, in measured ocean data. It finds that most climate models get this wrong, and thus have an #AMOC that is too stable. 🌊

Here's our new study with @ncas-uk.bsky.social and @ueaenv.bsky.social, looking at how the closing of the ozone hole affects the Southern Ocean’s capacity to take up atmospheric carbon. It's encouraging - the effects of ozone depletion are reversible, but only if greenhouse gas emissions stay low.
Did you know healing the ozone hole helps the Southern Ocean absorb carbon? 🌊

As the hole closes, its influence on the carbon sink of the Southern Ocean will diminish, while that of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will rise.

Decreasing importance of carbon-climate feedbacks in the Southern Ocean in a warming climate
Over the 21st century, ozone-driven circulation changes to the Southern Ocean carbon sink will be replaced by warming effects.

Speaking of BLOGS, I write a quasi-monthly newsletter about, er, anything that I think about in a given month. Sometimes related to my work as an ocean modeller, usually not. This month I wrote about a dog I met in Edinburgh, among other things.

What is someone who has worked for the US government as an expert scientist for 25 years supposed to say when a ketamine-addled tech bro demands bullet points about their "work achievements"? "I spent 3 days calibrating an instrument that you wouldn't understand even if you were sober"?

Another friend fired from US federal science today. Their research question was extremely *woke*: "How do we prevent America's wheat crop from being eaten by this invasive insect?" World class American science is being gutted by pathetic, limited men who understand nothing but the profit imperative.
