Have been thinking of an alt-history, hard sci-fi story of a cold war against the UAP phenomenon and NHI, probably done in an analogue style similar to Mare Ignis. Issue is I don’t know shit about military, technical, space, or ufo stuff all that well. Ramblings in alt text.

The first ever enactment of “Operation False Shepherd” and the first successful retrieval of a space-born UAP.” The graphic depicts the moon and space around it, along with the paths of two fleets and notes regarding them. The first is a UAP fleet (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena), going past the far side of the moon. The second is a human fleet, labeled Shepherd Fleet, which is redirected to corner the UAP fleet. The UAPs move away from the shepherds to avoid contact, putting them close to the moon’s surface. In range, a ground station launches a nuclear missile, causing the UAPs to scatter at impossible speeds. The EMP burst from the nuke disables one of the UAPs mid acceleration, allowing it to be later retrieved and reverse engineered. (Actual ramblings here) The core idea of this idea is basically “what if the hard sci-fi space combat of The Lunar War, but against something that is inherently not hard sci-fi for all intents and purposes?” Thus, near future flying silos fighting against depictions of UFOs accurate to actual accounts and reports. The alternate history stuff came along as fun worldbuilding, and then I couldn’t help but try to come up with a narrative and theme and message because of course. Overall the story would probs be split among two periods; the origins of the timeline, and the cold war taking place in the 2000s. The main splitting point of the timeline in the 1940s-50s, the US gov actually decides to publicly take the ufo phenomena as a serious threat. The general story and worldbuilding would be loosely inspired off of ufo myth and rumor, mainly revolving around conflicts between the US gov and the military industrial sector trying to profit off of the situation. The cold war half would largely be about rampant capitalism and authoritarianism driving earth into the mud, and the NHI holding the answer to the Fermi Paradox.

Fantasy bullshit continues. I'm satisfied with the blocking/general shapes of the landmasses for now, though still need to detail the coasts up north. Many names still need work.
A work-in-progress map made in the program Wonderdraft, labeled "The Waters of Ruapua, a Godly Sanctuary for Mortal Life." It depicts a relatively small interior seaway surrounded by mountainous landmasses. Color is being added, the coasts now green and the outside now desert. Same as before, but with an overlay showing early drafts of national borders. It's incomplete with only a handful of states present.
