The corporate coup is global.

Trump's mad tariffs do not mark the end of neoliberalism or free trade or whatever you want to call it.

They mark the end game of what we have been fighting for decades: corporate rule.

They do not believe in the public. They believe in their wealth.

It's all an open attempt to shatter what's left of the public and sell it for parts.

Unfortunately we are a half century into this counter-revolution, and all our collective institutions are so diminished that we don't feel strong or organized enough to fight them.

But fight them we must.

And what it really requires is a refusal to participate in it. We could mandate ethical standards for US imports rather than imposing tariffs, we could require vaccinations & negative tests to enter the country, we could maintain high regulatory standards for food and drug imports...

I was asked what a Canadian anti-fascist response would look like compared to the nationalist focus on a so-called trade war that completely misses the point (the fact that we are fighting fascism, not tariffs) and plays into fascists' hands. This is what I came up with:
A strong identification and denunciation of the specific things the US is doing to eliminate democracy and people's civil rights and a declaration that these actions are contrary to Canadian values and that we will stand strong in solidarity against them.

My latest reprinted in @truthout.org. "Feelings of fear and powerlessness are understandable, but if we surrender to fascism in our own minds, our feelings of helplessness will become self-fulfilling as Trump’s violence continues."
Trump Needs Public Cooperation to Enact a Fascist Vision. Here’s How We Refuse.
Our resistance to fascistic policies must be grounded in our sense of justice, rather than arguments about what’s legal.

The handling of @ombudsmanto.bsky.social's report on the denial of shelter beds for African refugees was shameful. Council owes us public debate on the disgraceful policy of segregation it enacted in 2023 — not to dismiss it and double-down on anti-Black racism. www.thestar.com/opinion/star...
Edward Keenan: There were many ways council could have dealt with the refugee shelter report. It chose one of the worst
Instead of discussing a recent damning report from the ombudsman on the way the shelter system treated refugee claimants, council voted to quietly bury it.

First-past-the-post isn’t as ‘stable’ as claimed. Canada has had 5 early elections since 2006 and is on track for a 6th.

Meanwhile, NZ, with PR, has had just 1 early election (in 2002) in 25 years—and it was only 7 weeks early.

The case against PR is collapsing in real-time.
