I put together a ranking of every movie I saw that screened in Venice, Telluride or Toronto. And I wrote a little bit about going to fall festivals during a time of great uncertainty about the future of film criticism.
Venice/Telluride/Toronto 2025: The Wrap-Up and the Rankings
When I was younger, I assumed I would never go to a film festival. That was something other critics did — it felt too far away for me to eve...

For the @latimes.com, I reviewed KEEPER, in which Osgood Perkins tries a Soderbergh-like genre doodle.
Review: In 'Keeper,' a romantic getaway becomes as nightmarish as you'd expect
The latest movie from horror director Osgood Perkins ('Longlegs,' 'The Monkey') shows off technical mastery while lacking the lingering sting of his better work.

John Swab long battled opioid addiction. He turned that pain into KING IVORY, an action-drama about the war on drugs. I saw the film at Venice last year. It opens tomorrow.

This book is out today. It was a pleasure and an honor to help a little bit in the process of creating it. REFLECTIONS tells the story of Roger Deakins' life and storied career in his words—with a lot of behind-the-scenes details and, of course, many pictures.
Reflections - Roger A. Deakins
In REFLECTIONS: On Cinematography, Deakins offers his fans and film enthusiasts the improbable journey of the “boy from Torquay, England” to Hollywood.

I've come to really enjoy Jesse Eisenberg in the NOW YOU SEE ME movies. Otherwise, NOW YOU DON'T is more sub-OCEAN'S ELEVEN silliness.

With JAY KELLY, Noah Baumbach puts forward the somewhat radical theory that celebrities used to be ordinary people -- and might still be during their rare unguarded moments.

Today is the 20th anniversary of my first review being published in Screen International. All these years later, and now Senior U.S. Critic, I remain grateful and endlessly excited to write for such a venerable trade publication. (That review was for HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE.)

I love that Zohran did not praise Cuomo in his speech. You absolutely do not have to say nice things about bad people. We should normalize that in “polite” politics: Praising bad people is not actually “civility.”
