Goodnight Skeetiepies

Back in October, a female Spotted Gum #moth laid a few eggs on my hand. So we hatched them and raised the caterpillars. A few weeks ago the caterpillars pupated & this week the adult moths emerged.

Female Spotted Gum moth (Entometa guttularis) with brown forewings, with dark zigzag lines and spots, and orange hindwings sitting on a wooden beam. This is the female that laid the eggs in October. Her wingspan was around 5-6 cms. Four moth eggs which have a width of about 1 mm. They are pale brown mottled with white, and have brown tips. They took 11 days to hatch. Of 7 eggs, 6 hatched and 4 caterpillars went on to pupate. Spotted Gum moth caterpillar on a branch. The caterpillars were fed on eucalyptus leaves and grew to around 7-8cm in length. They have pair of erectable fleshy horns behind the head and display a pair black and pale blue bands behind the head when threatened, which are just visible. The caterpillars pupate in papery white cocoons between the foodplant leaves. A male Spotted Gum moth (Entometa guttularis) freshly emerged this week sitting on a wooden surface. The male has striking feathery antennae. This male and 2 females have hatched so far, all were released.
