I realized the other day that I have been working at Microsoft through 8 different paradigm shifts in computing. From mainframes, to minis, to pcs, to graphical ui, to client/server, to mobile, to cloud, and now to Machine Learning/AI.

What a ride this has been, and I wonder what comes next?

Risky post!

(This is great, fun to read and the frustrated tone throughout really does capture how it feels sometimes to be an experienced programmer trying to argue that "LLMs are actually really useful" in many corners of the internet)

There's a whole lot of us who are finding LLMs genuinely useful on a daily basis, do you think we are deluding ourselves about that?

And unlike with crypto, "genuinely useful" here doesn't just mean "I gambled and my bag went up" (or I avoided a regulation somewhere)

Big tech demand for software engineers has past its peak. You can see it in declining hiring & compensation and increased layoffs.

A question is how much AI is playing a role?

As a replacement to coders, I think not much. As the driver of cost cutting to buy GPUs and build data centers? A lot.

Hallucinations in code are the least dangerous form of LLM mistakes
A surprisingly common complaint I see from developers who have tried using LLMs for code is that they encountered a hallucination—usually the LLM inventing a method or even a full …

What is the MCP Protocol, and why is it spreading so rapidly across IDEs, with all major ones having added support (Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Zed, Cline and Neovim)?
