This -- once again, people aren't against *technology writ large*. they're against technology that is at best stupid, at worst evil, made by the same set of billionaire men whose track record of prior tech has decimated whole industries and made people worse off
What angers people about AI?
They don’t want to be forced out of their jobs.
They don’t want to feel like their public interactions are being used to impoverish them while making some asshole rich.
I believe we can find a way to work backwards from there on regulating and controlling AI.

most people want a quick and simple answer to why AI systems encode/exacerbate societal and historical bias/injustice and due to the reductive but common thinking of "bias in, bias out," the obvious culprit often is training data but this is not entirely true

In a Social Science History paper I investigate which political parties pushed for—or resisted—working-time regulations from the late 19th to the 20th century.

#digitaltechnologies by nature are manipulative. Inferences, profiling, and the use of said are limiting, defining, enabling, fragmenting.

Very interesting read on the Trust Thermocline. I imagine @garius.bsky.social that the same logic applies to public services who are going digital without regard to the effect on public trust?
Had a tech bro tell me this morning that I need to go away and learn about the Trust Thermocline, to understand why emotive products like Twitter fail slowly then suddenly.
I pointed out I am fully aware of the Trust Thermocline. On account of being the chap who created it

Take a wild guess who appointed that judge.
That’s right — Donald Trump.
Thanks to him, 4 million people will no longer get a raise.
It’s far from the first time he’s cheated working class people out of their money, and it certainly won’t be the last.
