Trans folks living in the states, please either get a passport or make sure your current one is updated and correct. Gender markers on passports are currently self selected, which is as easy as it gets.
I made a flow chart for how to update your passport depending on your needs.

A passport is legal photo ID. If were born in or live in a state where you cannot change your gender markers, you can update your passport to have the correct information and use that as your photo ID. Current policies make it very easy to correct your gender marker, it is just self selected. You do not need to have it match other documents. You do not need to provide any additioanl documentation to do it. Name changes can be done without a court order, but it is harder to do without one. There are two kinds of passports: books and cards. Both last ten years. Cards have a less expensive fee at $65 for first time applicants and $30 renewal. Cards are only accepted at Canada and Mexico land crossings. You cannot use a passport card for international air travel. Books are more expensive at $165 for first time applicants and $130 for renewal. You can use a book passport for both land crossings at Canada and Mexico AND international air travel. These policies are likely to change as early as January. Processing time takes 4-6 weeks unless you pay for expedited processing. flow chart (I have no idea how to effectively write alt text for this.
