On #ThisDayInHistory in 1967, the #QueenElizabeth2 (#QE2) of the #Cunard line was launched in the UK. The last large ocean liner built on the Clyde in Scotland, she served for decades as the only transatlantic liner in service, until replaced by the French-built Cunarder #QM2.

35 years ago today, QE2 was enroute to New York from Southampton. She would make the crossing in her fastest ever time of 4 days, 6 hours and 57 minutes at an average speed of 30.16 knots. Unlike older fast liners, she did that with just 2 propellors too. Now the crossing takes from 7 to 9 days.

Cunard Line's Queen Elizabeth 2 was built by John Brown & Company. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II launched the ship on September 10, 1967. Her maiden voyage in December 1968 was cut short by turbine trouble, but she completed her full maiden voyage #OnThisDay in 1969 from Southampton to NY.

When the Queen Elizabeth 2 slid into the famous shipbuilding waters of the Clyde for the first time it was the start of a storied career but, in many ways, a final hurrah.

Here’s a wee throw back to Qe2’s final NYC departure in 2008. Such an unforgetable experience. It was quite an emotional day and qe2 seemed to say goodbye to Manhattan as she slid down the hudson sideways for such a long time before turning to meet QM2 and both sail back to the uk. #cruise #qe2
