Old cutaway rendering of the proposed Wilshire/La Brea subway station from the original Red Line plans in the 1980s. In addition to the station itself, there was also supposed to be a two-story underground mall with shops and restaurants.

This is LA’s equivalent of those abandoned piers that were on the Jersey City waterfront looking towards Manhattan.

Happy Saturday, have some incomprehensibly sexy Los Angeles midcentury modernism.
Alhambra City Hall, a low-slung white concrete box with blocks on the façade. A courthouse in Alhambra, this one also a low-slung box, but with more glass and lots of columns. It wouldn’t look out of place in 1960s/70s East Berlin.

The original 1930s map somehow managed to squeeze four colored services around the Loop, so there is hope there, but if not maybe there's black for Loop services while they're in the Loop, and then layering the Purple Express beneath the Brown Line, kind of like how it was depicted in the 70s/80s.
A heavily stylized map of the Chicago L system in the general style of the 1930s map. Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green Lines don't have anything special happen to them. All Loop services (Pink, Brown, Orange) are black while in the Loop and become their colors once they leave the Loop. The Purple Express is layered beneath the Brown Line.

Well that's the toughest part done. I think.
WIP of the Charleroi Metro map. Route lines and station icons in the central loop are done and that's about it. It's now a diagram of the actually existing system (as of 2027) as opposed to a diagram of the system had it actually been fully built out. I'll probably have sketches of the fantasy system when I post it on the blog.

Line 1: Sentvid—Polje Line 2: Vic—BTC Line 3: Crnuce—Rudnik WIP; thinking about better connections to the main rail station, the stadium, and so forth. Quick search couldn’t find any maps of the system, which is not to say none exist, so I’m not sure of the precise details of the historic system.

We are considering certain Complexities.
Simplified octolinear sketches of service patterns at Beaux-Arts/Palais and Waterloo stations on the Charleroi Metro. There are some differences from the IRL service configuration. The M1/2/3 enter the loop at Beaux-Arts, and the M4/5/6 enter the loop at Waterloo. The M1 and M4 travel counterclockwise around the loop, while the M2 and M5 travel clockwise. The M3 and M6 don’t travel the entire loop and run bidirectionally.

Turns out traveling to Pittsburgh tomorrow got me to crack this one.
Fantasy railway map of Pittsburgh. Lines with colors are all suburban rail, white lines are the T + Pittsburgh Railways + Harmony Line + West and MLK Busways (both rail here). Not shown: West Penn Railways. Intercity stations: Penn and Station Square are both active, along with a new one up the mountain from Station Square, and one underground that replaces the B&O and Wabash terminals.

One of McConnaughey's nihilist rants from True Detective, the one that goes... Human consciousness is a tragic misstep in evolution. We became too self-aware. Nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself. We are creatures that should not exist by natural law. We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, this accretion of sensory experience and feeling, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact, everybody's nobody. I think the honorable thing for our species to do is deny our programming. Stop reproducing. Walk hand in hand into extinction. One last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal. ...styled as one of those corny in-this-house-we-believe lawn signs.

There remain interurbans everywhere for those with the eyes to see.
The Rome-Giardinetti railway. The Forchbahn, a suburban rail train which runs along tram tracks in Zürich. The Fukui Railway, which runs along the street as a tram in Fukui city. The Karlsruhe Stadtbahn, which runs as a tram in the city center and as an S-Bahn outside of it.
