In the algorithm, you lose track of the place value, you just follow a procedure. In the 2nd strategy, 110 is decomposed into 100 and 10 and the parts are multiplied by 4,259, then added together. There are similarities, but one strategy holds on to place value. Both yield a correct answer.

I absolutely agree! Also the kids stating maybe or I'm not sure. Sounds like they don't have a sense of why science/math matter in the real-world and their present and future. Also, the way it's being taught to them isn't working for a number of reasons including relevance and engagement.
