Division and fractions are not two distinct concepts even if your curriculum separates them into different modules or units.
I recommend moving from equal group problems with whole number solutions to fractional amounts less than a whole within the same context/problem. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky

This or that?

There is a push for students to use algorithms because they are "more efficient" and the standards say so.

I argue that it's more important to understand different strategies and flexibly choose which one to use based on the context and the numbers. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky

In Counting Collections, it's important to allow mathematicians to take the lead. (Even if their strategy seems "inefficient" to you.) This group started with groups of 4 but struggled to count by 4s. I asked, "How can do to make this collection easier to count?" #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky

Launching counting collections in a 3rd grade classroom, we started with choral counting by 10s. Then, students worked with partners to organize and count a collection. Snap photos and use them as image talks with your mathematicians. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky

Simple modifications to the Eureka curriculum makes it more engaging and accessible for all learners. Consider launching with an image to preview vocabulary and offering number set choices to provide scaffolds and extensions within the same problem. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky #iteach

The Mathematics Framework is as incredible as it is lengthy. I had the opportunity to lead professional development for this fabulous group of middle school teachers and we dug into Chapters 1 and 7 of the mathematics framework. #iteach #mathsky #edusky #backtoschool

What do you notice?
What do you wonder?

In what context is this true?

I was waiting in line and a young man behind me was wearing this t-shirt. My brain got to mathing as I tried to figure this one out. After solving it I was reminded that context really matters. #iteach #mathsky #edusky

Exploring ways to integrate math warm-up routines into middle and high school classes.

How many ways can you make...?

This post doesn’t need fancy fonts or pretty designs. I'm preparing a book study on the math framework and revisiting Chapter 3: Number Sense.

What part of this quote, from Chapter 3 of the Mathematics Framework, resonates with you the most?

I love connecting read alouds to high-impact math activities. These Are My Rocks by @bethanwoollvin.bsky.social explores what makes a collection. It ends with a call to action, start your own collection. What a beautiful way to launch counting collections! #iteach #mathsky #edusky

Not all sub plans are created equally. Are you a substitute teacher looking for high-quality tasks that can be implemented in any elementary classroom? (Link in bio.) #iteach #substituteteacher #mathsky #edusky

Consider image talks inspired by summer destinations. This photo was taken in the shop exiting the Astro Blasters ride at Disneyland.

How can we invite students to share photos from their summer vacations to inspire problem solving contexts?

This question and the data is yielded is really important for us to see. 99 fourth and fifth graders responded to this group's survey.
-What do you notice?
-What do you wonder?
-How can these representations lead to change in how and what we are teaching?

Fifth graders considered a variety of ways to represent there data. Take a look at this representation and consider: What do you notice? What do you wonder? #iteachmath #edusky #mathsky #iteach

Best way to spend a Saturday morning! We collaborated with UCLA Math Project on a Family Workshop series and it was amazing! Also a great excuse to hang out with some of my favorite educators including @joannahayman.bsky.social and @berkeleyeverett.bsky.social, Leah, Kumi and Stef!

When playing make ten, sometimes the cards require some sophisticated, multi-step moves. Use addition and subtraction to make 10. How would you make 10? #iteachmath #edusky #mathsky

Sometimes the problems in our curricula are too easy for our students. Consider posing open-ended extension questions that engage them in problem-solving using the same context. This keeps everyone immersed in the math and creates space for conferring with learners. #iteachmath #mathsky #edusky

Counting Collections are a great way to informally assess student understanding of cardinality, one to one correspondence and number sequence. What do these kindergarteners know? What questions would you ask them? #iteachmath #edusky #mathsky

Do you use number strings in your classroom?

I created this number string to invite 3rd graders to revisit addition, hoping to bring out relational thinking as students solved these problems using mental math strategies. #iteachmath #edusky #mathsky
