Propaganda works, and Stephen miller and the rest of them know that a constant parade of fear will indeed do much of their work for them
I said for years that the only way to permanently reduce migration to the United States was to destroy the vision that the world had of this country as the land of opportunity.

That wasn't a goddam suggestion!

Look I think valuing human life is a phenomenal, wonderful, fantastic idea and also that’s why everyone opposes the genocide in Palestine and the colonial violence in Haiti and Sudan and Congo right?

Oh oh you didn’t mean those lives I see

Again:Journalists are not stenographers. We are to get information, report and verify the facts, and then report the reality not the talking point. What Trump is doing in DC and threatening in cities is NOT a crime crack down because he says it is. Don’t regurgitate. Report the truth not propaganda.

I used to find "DEI" to be a weak corporate counterpoint to "racial justice" but now I unironically want every business in America doing DEI as loudly as possible because the relevant counterpoint today is "overt racism."

People are generally not ideological and mostly don’t care about policy. They have group based interests and trusted elites they look to for guidance and leadership in carrying out those interests. Most people’s beliefs are an incoherent ideological hodgepodge
My sense of things has always been that most people do not have strong, deeply felt opinions on a lot of policy issues, and so their opinions can change fairly quickly depending on what’s in the news.
Why do people's opinions on a single issue change with the direction of the wind?

If you’re not white, or you have friends or loved ones who aren’t white, or you’re not a total sociopath and therefore care about fellow humans who aren’t white, you need to understand this regime thinks not being white is inherently suspect, and lots of your fellow Americans are fine with that.

School districts creating secondary literacy curriculum that doesn’t include novels during a ‘literacy crisis’ is baffling & counterproductive.

Stakeholders: your district doesn’t value your kids’ ability to read and think if their secondary English class is merely test prep.

This, not cancelation of elections, is the kind of scenario we should be gaming out (among others).
Besides the (by now very realistic) nightmare scenarios, there are more mundane political implications: this is a police force that can be used to affect elections. I predict that it will be deployed to discourage voting in Democratic strongholds in the next elections.
If the GOP reconciliation bill passes, ICE gets through FY2029:

- $45 billion for detention, on top of the current annual budget of $3.4 billion
- $14.4 billion for transportation and removal, on top of the current annual budget of $750 million
- $8 billion for hiring/retention
- Billions more.
