This is the key to making a successful transition from IC to management, right there.
Hands down, the best part about being an eng manager is seeing my directs/team succeed, both in big ways and small—shipping a huge project they're proud of or improving some interpersonal skill consistently. As much as I miss coding as much as I used to, this is the stuff that keeps me an EM.

I've been contacting CTOs and VPs all over Europe this month as part of my cold outreach process.

Every single one so far is a man 🥲

this confirms something i have long suspected, which is that certain people are told that their professional and academic failures are because of “affirmative action” or “DEI” as a way to avoid difficult conversations about their mediocrity www.wsj.com/lifestyle/ca...
You Blamed DEI for Hurting Your Career. Now What?
For people who pin their failures on diversity, corporate America’s DEI retreat removes a barrier—or maybe an excuse.

Just posted my first newsletter of the year! Aiming for posting twice per month in 2025.

I really enjoyed writing my thoughts on two articles by @skamille.themanagerswrath.com and Jamie Lawrence, CTO of Podia.

This one is for my #engineering managers and senior devs:

Want to drive change? Time your initiatives right. Pushing a major refactor during a tight feature sprint is like trying to change tires during a race. Context matters.

What happens if a company’s engineering team suddenly becomes a LOT more productive: more story points shipped, self-reported 20-50% productivity increases after using GenAI tools (that the company pays for.) No HC change.

BUT

Revenue stays FLAT despite all this

What then?

Loved this thread on transitioning from VP Product -> CPO, lots of points that are true regardless of function 👌
What does the transition to CPO look like?
Some advice for first time CPOs ...

Firstly, this is a 𝗕𝗜𝗚 step up from VP.
At least as big as IC -> people manager.
Don't underestimate it.

What makes it such a big change?
Let's run through 6x key aspects.

One of the most underrated pieces of interview advice:

Lean on your recruiter to help you prepare.

Even if they don’t offer it, get proactive and ask them.

Why this important?

You were selected for a reason. Find out why from the recruiter so you know what to double down on.

Lukewarm take, but if you're "protecting your energy" by avoiding workplace relationships, you're actually making your job harder and your career trickier to navigate.

Find your work tribe - they're the ones who'll have your back when things get tough (and they will get tough).

Here's a question for you.

When reading an article in a newsletter:

1️⃣ Do you prefer to read it in your email in its entirety?
2️⃣ Do you prefer to visit the website and add it to your favourite "read it later" service?

Do share!

While I’m cautiously optimistic the job market gets better, we’re still not out of the woods yet.

There are still layoffs and RIFs occurring in tech.

Until positive sentiment increases, you need to have a Plan B.

Some suggestions to start asap 🧵:

Are they the personality hire, or do they understand the intricate web of workplace relationships and decision-making dynamics in ways that you subconsciously avoid doing? 🤪

I get that companies want to follow what Amazon does, but here's the thing:

Most companies aren't Amazon.
Middle managers are in a tough spot right now.

They've been a target for layoffs as companies look to lean out their organizations, but that doesn't look like it's changing (in the short term).

They want less decision makers between the CEO and your individual contributors 🧵

Recruiters and hiring managers, check your candidate experience before being too quick to judge 👇
People are so quick to say a candidate is a red flag if the first question they ask is about benefits or PTO, yet they never stop and question if there’s something wrong with their interview process.

If anyone has to ask about these things it’s because that information wasn’t given.

I've been following the subtle demonisation of office friendships through the zeitgeist, and I'm left wondering.

I'm not saying people should adore their jobs and be besties with all their colleagues, but chances are your most significant work won't be done in isolation.
