The bartender finishes making a pair of rum and cokes and hands them off to a customer before turning back to Stede. "Well, ok, I can, actually, but I shouldn't. My manager says I have to stop handing out advice like breath mints." "We're supposed to have this beautiful, perfect life!" Stede groans, already feeling like that life is slipping out of his grasp. Normalcy was just within reach. The sweet, blissful nothing of being a normal man, with a normal wife. Completely unremarkable in every way. He could buy Mary a house in the suburbs. Get a ride-on mower for their perfectly green lawn. No one questions if a man with a ride-on mower is masculine enough, if he's up to the task of taking over a real estate empire, if he's secretly thinking about the taste of his best friend's lips. No, a guy with a ride-on mower is unimpeachable. That's who Stede wants to be. Needs to be. "Do you know what time Home Depot opens?" Stede shouts at the bartender.

Izzy tried to regulate his breathing — the only half-useful thing his mandatory post-incident counselor had taught him. It wasn't working. "Hey!" Fang's voice was loud and firm and his hand was warm on Izzy's shoulder. Izzy's breathing steadied, and his rage-induced tunnel vision receded. He saw that Fang actually had his other hand on Stede's shoulder. He, too, seemed to be cooling down. "It's Thanksgiving. Let's be sweet, yeah? Besides, you've got business with the wife, Stede." Stede blinked dramatically. "Oh goodness! My plane!" He seemed to forget all about Izzy as he frantically threw his blazer over his arm and scrambled to pick up his luggage. As he trotted to the terminal, arms laden with bags, he called out, "Happy Thanksgiving, Fang!" Fang chuckled to himself, then looked at Izzy. He tilted his head to one side, smiling. The ugly overhead lights made his cheekbones shine. "Baby gays, am I right?" Fang said, raising one eyebrow like he was letting Izzy into a little secret. Izzy felt himself flush. He didn't like this feeling. He didn't like how this guy was getting under his skin, disrupting his routine, and blocking the whole fucking arrivals area of Terminal B so he could swan about giving warm hugs. What was the point of it all, anyway? These were passengers. They were going to come and go and maybe leave a tip and a good review, but other than that, what was in it for Fang? "Move it along," Izzy spluttered at the concrete.

Don’t get between a guy and his mini quiches
