It is very clear Syria is still not a safe country. It is obvious that there will still be people needing asylum. Germany, Austria, France et al freezing claims shows how countries just wait for an excuse, and will use any they can, to prevent people seeking safety, even when lives are still at risk

No it couldn't. Hope that helps.

Immigration, borders and asylum actually, despite political posturing, have minimal impact on other areas because they are primarily self funded, via other migrants' extortionate visa costs for example. This is purely fearmongering and scapegoating by the Telegraph.

Essential in a country like Malaysia, facing increasing impex pressures, labour mkt stressors, and race to the bottom tactics by suppliers and businesses.

What we are seeing in Sudan is a mass mobilization of people coordinating relief efforts in the face of an inadequate intl. aid response and an absent civilian state. The situation is catastrophic AND ppl can learn frm the mutual aid networks they built.

Have not seen much on here on Sudan, so I'm amplifying this horrific report that shows the number who are killed is higher than previously estimated.

Adding here other writing to read to understand this war that has displaced over 11 million people; the highest displacement crisis globally. 🧵
More than 61,000 dead in Khartoum state alone, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine's Sudan Research Group finds: 26,000 of them killed as a direct result of the violence. Leading cause of death across Sudan is preventable disease and starvation.

A Unforgettable Sudanese Summer.
I spent 10 days in Khartoum for a research project in early 2021. We spoke to several stakeholders incl those of Hamdok transitional govt on labour migration concerns. The youth had so much hope and I was emotionally bound to Sudan since then.

Heard of Bestinet? It's a company that provides IT services and a platform for migrant worker recruitment in Malaysia. Malaysia, similar to many destination countries in Asia has employer-tied visas but also sectoral divisions for its contractual migrant labour. Now, onto Bestinet... 🧵

Not to be overly picky here, but the only thing anyone can learn from Italy's approach is that when you create harsher border policies you cause routes to shift, which also makes it harder to track accurate numbers of people using irregular routes. It doesn't actually stop people seeking safety.
