Writer. Progressive. Mental health advocate. Cat mom. Hopeful US expat.
I wonder about this all the time. Do I fight inside or from a safe distance? And where is there to go, anyway?
I can't say whether escaping a fascist regime is ethically justifiable, but I've read enough great literature by 20th century Jews who got out of Europe (and read enough about Jewish writers who DIDN'T) to speculate that I can do more good with an exile's keyboard than a resister's gun

New: Meta has deleted trans and nonbinary Messenger themes, as well as the blog posts announcing them. Happens the same week that it has changed its rules to allow users to say LGBTQ+ people are "mentally ill"

I think I want to bake biscuits. Buttermilk or butter swim. Baking is very process-oriented and detail-oriented, and that soothes me.

This is how I feel about eating with people
I’m in a writers room which on one hand is good because hey, work, but is also bad because we all order and eat lunch together and I can’t order a pound of hot wings and hide in my office eating them at lunch watching K-drama.

The existential dread is killing me. I don't know how I can survive 4 years of this, plus watching democracy fall in America. The US Constitution will be nothing more than a memory.

Feeling like we need to be singing this song to each other as inspiration for the next, oh, 10-15 years. #walkon #U2

I saw a man on the subway in Brooklyn proudly wearing his Trump 2024 cap. That told me all I needed to know about how many of them are living among us. They're out and proud now, and I don't think they're going to be quiet anymore.

"Don't Engage, Just Block" should be the Bluesky motto.

We have a chance to start over and make this place better than the other place.
Just blocked a retail account that spammed itself and its products into an unrelated comment thread of mine, so, retail accounts, let that be a heads up, that sort of activity is not going to work out for you here. "Don't Engage, Just Block" applies to you too, if you do things like that.

Goodreads is owned by Jeff Bezos. A better alternative is StoryGraph, a Black woman-owned platform. And before y’all start, you can transfer all your Goodreads data to Storygraph so you literally have no excuse.

Me, every day. But I don't call myself Emily
Stuck on a writing project? Here's what I always ask myself in that situation: Emily, have you considered that you might not be very good and should abandon writing altogether and move to the woods and make candles or possibly become a nun or something?

The most important thing in writing is to finish. A finished thing can be fixed. A finished thing can be published. A finished thing can be made into a movie.

An unfinished thing is just a dream. And dreams fade if you don't hold on tight enough.

So finish the thing.

Goodreads is owned by Amazon & there is an AMAZING alternative‼️

The StoryGraph is a black women-owned competitor to GoodReads with better UI in my opinion.
When you sign up you can even transfer your data from Goodreads to StoryGraph!

This is really good advice. Sometimes you have to be less clever in the beginning so you can be clever at the end
3. you should always know more than your audience, and your audience NEEDS to know less than you think they do. you'll want to show off all the little details you considered when crafting your world, but are those details relevant to the plot or are you just infodumping?
