Musil sees in Franz Kafka's Stoker Kafka's own soul:

A primordial drive to goodness takes shape in Kafka’s story—no resentment, rather something of the submerged passion of childhood for Goodness.... and much for which one can conceive of no other expression save moral tenderness.

Great Post on Kafka anniversaries. Maybe I can finish my own book on Franz Kafka this year. Maybe more people will get involved in writing comments on Kafka and his life and works on this Talk about Kafka BlueSky site. But maybe not!
It's the last day of the 100th anniversary year of the publication of Kafka's The Trial, which might explain what we saw in 2025. Don't worry, though—2026 is the 100th anniversary of the publication of Kafka's more hopeful novel The Castle, so it should be a good year.

An excellent reading of The Metamorphosis by Christopher Plummer as Vladimir Nabokov lecturing at Cornell University.

In his final comment Nabokov decides that the scientist has passion; but it is the artist who has precision.

From Janouch, Conversations with Kafka:

"Most men are not wicked,” said Franz Kafka, talking of Leonhard Frank’s book Man Is Good. “Men become bad and guilty because they speak and act without foreseeing the results of their words and their deeds. They are sleepwalkers, not evildoers.”

The terror of the situation… is that in a very real way this is far worse than…
Most are not wicked. They are sleep-walkers, not evil evildoers.

A wonderful analysis of Kafka's "The Problem or our Laws" relevant to current times. Who are the 'people' of a democracy? Do the 'Nobles' get to decide? Or the 'people'?

Judith Butler: To Imagine a World After This, Democracy Needs the Humanities
Many young people tell me that they fear there is no future. When they ask about the future, they are also asking: what is still imaginable or for what may we still hope? To say there is no future,…

✨ Kafka knew the intoxication of his own isolation, and in Milena, he found a mirror—a flame that threatened to consume the very silence he lived within. Listen closely to the voice of longing, where the only reality is the truth found in their letters. #booksky #LettersToMilena #FranzKafka #Prague

Indubitable in me is the greed for books. Not so much to own or to read them as to see them, to convince myself in a bookseller’s display of their continued existence.

"In 1902, Max Brod met Franz Kafka in Prague's "Reading and Speaking Hall of German Students," where Kafka was giving a lecture on Arthur Schopenhauer. A lifelong friendship began."

This google translation is wrong about who gave the talk. It was Max Brod. Still, it is a nice picture.

Nice excerpt. It is not just a Kafka nightmare turned into fiction; we are living in this world of Josef K.

What sort of men were they…What office did they represent? After all,K. lived in a state governed by law, there was universal peace, all statutes were in force…He'd always tended to take things lightly,to believe the worst only when it arrived, making no provision for the future…

I'm fascinated by this Kafka quote; but I would like to know the context of when he wrote this. That is important to me if I'm to interpret it as Kafka intended it.

What if a psychopathic murderer wrote it? Is it possible for one's "most intense obsessions ""to be evil yet true to one's "soul"?

This is Kafka-Land as Judith Butler found out. Anyone can be arrested or fired from their jobs without any explanation of why. The Supreme Court just ok'ed this procedure.

It is the age of the wound more than its depth and overgrowth that makes it painful. To be torn open again and again in the same wound channel, to see the wound that has been operated on countless times taken under treatment again, this is what is awful.
