Watson’s life is a good demonstration that expertise in one area doesn’t make you universally smart or talented. Lacking humility to his degree is one of the worst characteristics a scientist can have
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Staggering atrocities in Sudan.

Following the mass slaughter of nearly 500 men, women, and children at a maternity hospital, UN officials say: "The situation is simply horrifying... El Fasher, already the scene of catastrophic levels of human suffering, has descended into an even darker hell."

The difference between aggregate right and left vote is almost 2 to 1. Again, the center right can choose to collaborate with a decimated center left or the far right. Takes like this are way too premature and might well prove completely mistaken.

The narrative seems to be(come) that the Dutch election shows a “comeback of the political center”. We have seen this frame before, implying “the center” has an ideological substance and is stable. But “the center” keeps moving right on mostly nativist, but also often authoritarian, issues.

This is one of the most incredible political speeches I’ve ever heard

"The dream of every Muslim is simply to be treated the same as every other New Yorker. And yet for too long we have been told to ask for less than that and to be satisfied with whatever little we receive. No more."
The dream of every Muslim is simply to be treated the same as any other New Yorker.

And yet, for too long, we have been told to ask for less than that, and endure hatred and bigotry in the shadows.

No more.

But when you realize that most violence is not by strangers (hence police violence being large %), you see why it's vital for cops to obscure it: no one believes more $$ for punishment bureaucracy is a solution to the reasons people **in some kind of relationship with each other** hurt each other.
