Macrophages can clear damaged mitochondria through microautophagy, a process that bypasses traditional recycling pathways and influences immune cell metabolism and activation. doi.org/g9z9pg
Macrophages can use microautophagy to clear damaged mitochondria, bypassing traditional pathways
Macrophages are part of the immune system's frontline; they attack and "eat" invaders to protect surrounding cells. They, along with other cells, maintain intracellular conditions through macroautophagy, using autophagosomes to help digest broken cell components.
