On this day in 1940, the British complete the "Miracle of Dunkirk" by evacuating 338,226 Allied troops from France via a flotilla of over 800 vessels ranging from Navy destroyers to small fishing boats. It had to be by boat because, obviously, French Air Traffic were on strike.

Seeing all the wonderful photographs and film of VE Day street parties in the UK I'm so impressed by the Union Flag bunting.
They can't have made it from scratch, everything was rationed.Was it all in attics from the end of the Great War,Queen Victoria's Jubilee? Or did everyone just have it around?

The only reason Patterdale Terriers aren't recognised as a breed by the UK Kennel Club is because they are superior to all other dogs and would win Crufts every year.
