Nonprofit education professional, helping educators meet the needs of adult learners all over the state of Minnesota. Geek, gamer, baker and mother of one fantastic teenage boy. [Varric voice]: No matter what anyone's told you, Minneapolis isn't that bad.

(We are open for classes today, btw. Here’s hoping the plows get the streets into reasonable shape by 8:00.)

I had to get up at 5:30 this morning to make the call whether our adult education centers would close today due to yesterday’s snow storm. NOTHING about me is functional at 5:30 am. So I promptly poured scalding hot coffee on my hand instead of into the mug. 😩

I am very fortunate to live in the Twin Cities where a wide variety of cultures, including the large Somali community, make this such a fascinating and beautiful place to be.

Uffda that was a long drive across MN to get home today. Saw lots of cars in the ditch and nearly spun out ourselves a couple times. Glad to be back in my cozy house in Minneapolis!

Give to the Max Day is this week. Please consider supporting a nonprofit that shares your values. I would be honored if you’d consider supporting Literacy MN and our amazing teachers and students.

Thinking of my Dad on this Veterans Day. He was drafted and served in logistics and transportation in Korea.

Took my first-time voter (newly minted 18-year-old) to vote in the Minneapolis mayoral/city council etc. election today. Proud of him for being an engaged citizen.

It’s my birthday, so my husband made sure to park on a street where they were doing street sweeping so his car would be towed and not would have to drive him to the impound lot near downtown at rush hour. Yay happy birthday to me!

It's kinda cool that Gary Larson is doing new cartoons because he picked up a digital tablet, taught himself how to use it, and it made him love drawing again.

I am proud of my teacher, John, and his volunteer, Elmi, for their increasingly delicate work helping newcomers prepare and apply for US Citizenship. Adult Education matters, and learning is for everyone! sahanjournal.com/immigration/...
Proof of ‘good moral character’ increasingly important as U.S. citizenship requirements change
The government is adding more questions and “good moral character” evaluations to the U.S. citizenship test. More changes could be coming.

I’m at the lake. After Labor Day weekend I’m never sure if I’ll make it back again until next year.

So many of my friends and colleagues in the nonprofit space are losing their jobs due to federal funding freezes and cuts, and the elimination of refugee resettlement in the US. Just found out yesterday that a local org I collaborate with is cutting 30% of staff. 1/2

Look, it's long, but it's a very informative (and fun) look at the roots of the anti-vax movement in case you ever thought about buying into that movement.
Rotten roots, rotten growth.

In March of 2020, I was the leader of a statewide team of educators working to improve distance and online learning in adult education, and was 2 months into a 2-year term as president of our state professional organization. Then COVID hit. Suddenly, everyone in my field needed my expertise 1/4

Some people on my team may or may not have jobs tomorrow, and I have no useful information to share with them. This is not governance. This is intentional disruption of the entire US nonprofit sector with the express purpose of hurting vulnerable populations.

So, I’m the world’s most boring heteronormative middle-aged white woman, but my life is vastly improved by all the queer folk in it and anybody comes in here making noise about them and I’m going to be a real mama bear. Got it? Good.
