This is still happening across the country, btw. Nobody cares to report on it, though. My old district just settled a million dollar lawsuit after admins were found implicated in the serial bathroom harassment of an LGBTQ student. Same admins that previously tried covering up a string of suicides.
Right around the time I was graduating high school, this was the environment for queer people in Minnesota. We had a teen mental health crisis because gay teens were routinely bullied to self-harm and suicide to the point that it made national headlines.
