Posting to save. Sounds lovely!
Sharing a sauce recipe I saw on Instagram years ago. Some French chef made it with about a tablespoon of tomato paste, a tablespoon of Dijon mustard, and a quarter cup of white wine cooked down til thick, then added 1/4L (~1C) cream, cooked til thick, and then some butter.

for example, if you become a statistician you will be perpetually asking people “what is your research question” regardless of which area of stats you work in
It’s a difficult proposition for undergrads to work through, but choosing a major isn’t really about what kind of jobs you want to do so much as what sorts of questions you want to think about or *how* you want to think about questions throughout your life.

Three weeks until everyone gets to see Dr Walden fail spectacularly at her job AND fumble her best chance with a gorgeous butch demon hunter.

THE INCANDESCENT. May 13.
Preorders should now be available nearly everywhere for THE INCANDESCENT, coming in Spring 2025!

This is a book about money and education and status symbols, about loving your career, about demons, about magic, about fantasy school - but most of all about how 'school' is always a kind of fantasy.

Delighted to have commissioned and edited this fantastic essay by Isabel Black for our Strange Horizons special issue on ageing in SFF.

"Grannies Against Oppression" explores the role of the elders in resisting tyranny, through the lens of the The Expanse:

Grannies Against Oppression
Here, I examine the roles of the crones of the Expanse space in Persepolis Rising, Tiamat’s Wrath, and Leviathan Falls as leaders and combatants in a fight for freedom that is always to some extent…

My husband, who is in the hospital for emergency surgery, texted his therapist to say he couldn’t keep his appointment. His therapist texted back that he was being prepped for heart surgery and he wouldn’t be available either. It’s that week.

I'm a fan of fighting the good fight. I love and appreciate all the warriors here. Keep fighting. But I also need joy and brightness in my feed, so people reading great books—seriously, books they *love*—adoring their pets, eating deliciousness, discovering nifty things: please say hello!

Odd evening. Apparently the door didn’t latch after my husband took out the trash, because coffee and tv political commentary was interrupted by a tall and very wasted young man wearing a hospital bracelet walking into my front hall without knocking. He was seeking food and an Uber.

This essay brilliantly unpacks things I have been thinking about for years (power of stories for evil; heroism and its dark mirror self-righteousness; the legacy of the early 2000s dystopian boom.)
"I watched the insurrection with an uncanny mix of the familiar and the horrid, like coming upon maggots in food you only knew as good."

The Space Between Worlds author Micaiah Johnson talks writing revolution in a post-January 6 world:

OK. I’ve just read a novel in which a character acquires a butter knife as a weapon of self defense. What on earth can you do with a butter knife? Threaten to spread them? “Fear the peanut butter, evil one! Cower before the cream cheese!”

Why is it that a young man’s voice carries so far when he is holding forth on The True Nature of All Things and His Personal Integrity and, also, Women? We went out to dinner for my husband’s birthday. The food was wonderful, the service exceptional, the guy …. Reader, we decamped.

I haven't given a journaling prompt for a while, but

1. think of one recent time you disappointed yourself. what was it about?
2. imagine someone who won't accept that this incident is reason to get down on yourself.
3. what suggestions do they give for you to be a friend to yourself about this?
