December 1993 - EDGE publishes its some early whispers about a new manufacturer throwing its hat into the console race and the steps it took toward... the PlayStation.

Always very cool to see early stuff like this; 1994 was one of the most exciting years for new developments.

It looks like a 90s portable CD player with a cartridge port on the top. A CD-i unit with a little flip-up LCD screen and a two button mouse

Poorly aged things and a bullet dodged that might have scuppered the PS2's runaway success to some degree - if Sony had passed on DVD and instead gone for lower-capacity proprietary HD CDROM media.

PLAYSTATION 2 TO PASS ON DVD A magazine snippet reporting in 1998 stated that inside sources were reporting that Sony felt market acceptance of DVD wasn't high enough, and manufacturing costs were too high for them to go with it for PS2. And they'd instead go for a high-density CDROM that holds about 1 GB of data. It probably would have been something like the Gamecube's own smaller-capacity discs.

Rotary phone design and the digital 90s combined in the design of this 1990 Panasonic Kurz Cordless Answering System.

After some translation, I've determined that what looks like a rotary dial is a contacts memory bank. I'll record six of them and speak the caller's ID to you as a call comes in.
A full-page ad for the 70,000 yen price tag Panasonic Kurz, which looks like something in 1980 would envision we'd be using in the year 2000. It's got a slimline receiver resting on its slide in a sloping rest while what looks like it might be a rotary dial is being used for a memory bank. You still turn it though to access the contacts. It has privacy modes, caller ID, and FM sound for call tones. All in a stylish marble white colour.

Here's a fun thing about Cotton: it was one of the more frequently requested games in Beep! Mega Drive magazine back in the day. How frequently? It was showing up in their monthly reader survey charts for top 20 game port wishlist for at least two years straight. I put more info in the alt texts.
August 1991 issue of Beep! Mega Drive magazine, page 28 A chart for the top 20 games fans want ported to the Mega Drive. The first displayed number is current ranking, second number is last month's ranking or a line if it is new to the charts or ranked lower than 20 last month, followed by a specific game's title or sometimes a franchise, with the publisher and platform information below (platform information is rather inconsistent with labeling so I won't include it), followed by "Points" at the end based on reader surveys that the staff calcuated: 1 (1). From Famitsu with Love on Christmas Day in 1987: snazzy Phantasy Star and Afterburner ads. Both blasting out YM2413 FM Synth from Sega Mark III/Master Systems - if you had ¥6800 to spare.
