A few years back I coded an algorithm to compute daily surface melt in Antarctica from microwave sat. data. The NSIDC adopted the code but it isn't live yet.

Until then, I created my own "Antarctica Today" app that'll auto-post replies to this thread.

Daily surface melt extent w/ a 1-day lag.

UK MPs – and the wider public – also systematically underestimate support for climate action. Chart from the latest Climate Barometer email.

ICYMI: One Rule to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2024/02/one-...
The falling debt to GDP fiscal rule could reasonably be called the ‘reduce public investment’ rule. In government Labour has to change it, even if their only goal is to be re-elected.

Ignorance about national debt (and macroeconomics) has been the most significant factor in UK's poor economic performance since 2010 and has caused unnecessary misery (and worse) for millions. It now threatens our ability to tackle the existential threat of the #ClimateEmergency.

mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2024/02/deto...
UK politicians would be delighted if firms increased private investment through borrowing. It makes no sense to think in different terms when it comes to worthwhile public investment.

Good to see that George Monbiot is here and posting links to his important articles such as this one:-
In the UK and around the world, environmental defenders are being attacked with ever more extreme laws. Who designs these laws? Corporate lobbyists. Who demands they are imposed? The billionaire media.
THIS IS NOT JUSTICE.
This week's column. 🧵

In a world built by plutocrats, the powerful are protected while vengeful laws silence their critics...
In the UK and around the world, those who challenge rich corporations are being hounded and crushed with ever-more inventive penalties, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

"Global weirding" has been hitting hard this week. But even still, hope shines through - from Hawai'i's progress towards becoming a renewable energy paradise to Nigeria cutting fossil fuel subsidies.

🚨NEW REPORT🚨🔌💡
At COP28 the world agreed to 3x renewables by 2030. This is great -> but how do we break this global goal down to the regional level? And where does the $$$ need to flow?

A new report by @climateanalytics.bsky.social digs into the detail... 🧵

Is there a thread that gives the inside track on how to make the most of BlueSky? I get that it's largely intuitive and similar to Twitter but there seem to be some subtle differences. For example, how do #Feeds work and why some of them closely controlled and others not so much?

1/ This summary is brilliant and essential reading. Reporting of the AMOC tipping point study has been polarised. After reading Simon's balanced summary, I think it's reasonable to be alarmed and to dismiss the arguments of those who claim that the risk is overblown. 🧪🌏 🔌💡
I got up at 6am to write a 6,000-word summary of the weekend's climate coverage in UK/intl media:

❄️Amoc "tipping point" study
⛽️Trump's fossil fuel funding
🏘️All the commentary on Labour's £28bn

+ much much more!

Context for today's £28bn kerfuffle:

The UK spent a staggering £265bn on energy in 2022 – the most recent data available – including more than £100bn on imported oil and gas alone

Insulating homes + expanding domestic green energy supplies wld bring those numbers down…

We need more articles like this. Specifically we need more articles that are brave enough to speculate (in a reasonable way) and attempt to join the dots. We are facing the greatest existential threat we have ever faced. Relying purely on settled science in such times could be considered reckless.
