Love the outdoors and used to love getting out into my local Sussex countryside with my camera. Now it’s mostly memories.
Something that always warmed our hearts was that Kinsey didn’t once cry after leaving her parents and siblings. Not one apparent moment of homesickness of loneliness. From the moment we set off home with her in our car, she just settled with us.

Here she is today…🥰.

Kinsey’s 9 years old today! Where have the years gone? We’ve had a few weeks under those 9 years with her in our lives and she’s changed from a tiny, mischievous puppy on the day we brought her home into a loving companion who currently is lying next to me on the settee.

It looked a lot worse than it felt! Not sure if it was skin cancer or a wart, so am awaiting biopsy result.
My lip was quite swollen for a few days but there was very little discomfort.
Now I can just about eat and drink normally again, just two stitches to go. Almost healed now. Thanks for asking!☺️

Phone snap just now.
Reminder: bare feet outside in Winter? Not a good idea.

I did! Due to using walking sticks and having to look down I didn’t see many birds but certainly heard a few - including the Water Rail! But looking down means I see more by my feet!

Had minor surgery done at my local hospital this AM. Odd little blemish after dry, cracked lips during hot August.
Anyway, 5 stitches and 2 hours later the local anaesthetic is just starting to wear off. Only cool food and drink for 48 hours. Rest. Sorted.
Free at point of care.
Love the #NHS .

A view anyone living in Lewes will know very well. Quick snap on my phone. Next time I’ll take my camera, on a sunny evening in Summer, when the castle walls glow in the golden hour.

Cocker Spaniel bedhead.
Mine probably looks as bad as I’ve been awake since just after 2. 🥱

A brief early evening wander near Beachy Head was rather birdless, possibly due to lots of noisy walkers.
Due to having to look at the ground when I walk I missed the best encounter of a female Sparrowhawk nearby.
Still, my close encounter with a Bloody Nosed Beetle made up for the lack of birds.

LOL I’ve been catsitting for the past week. Yesterday when Bob joined me in the sun I noticed her “teddy bears” but didn’t manage a decent photo. This is spooky.

Made the most of a sunny morning and found the County Flower of Sussex, the beautiful Round-headed Rampion.
It’s also known as The Pride of Sussex, and fittingly it’s often found up on the chalk Downland that, for many, epitomises Sussex, both East and West.

Watching Pointless. Thinking of words ending in “cher”. Said (out loud) “catcher”. The dog has just shot off her chair to go looking in the garden for a cat. 🙄
Sadly for her the door is closed as it’s pouring so she’s come back in a huff and settled back to sleep.

Look. I’m trying to sleep here. Can’t a girl have an undisturbed doze when she wants?

Where I live now is useless for the moonrise. I had to drive, looking for a clear horizon. Made the wrong choice and should have just gone to the coast instead.
Too many trees that were too close to me so by the time the Moon had cleared the trees the gorgeous colour had gone.☹️

I’m not sure what kind of stand-off was involved the last time the verge-scalping contractors came along my road but outside one house there’s a wonderful display of beautiful blue #Chicory that’s been saved from the mowers.
So many swathes of grass are brown, with almost no flowers. Heartbreaking.

At #RSPBPulboroughBrooks today Ragwort was EVERYWHERE, it seemed, and nearly every plant I studied was being nibbled at by Cinnabar Moth caterpillars. Never seen so many (we even have some in our garden).
It was great, using the Tramper, the difference for me between being out, or staying home.
July 8, 2025 at 7:13 PM
I can’t walk easily at the moment (arthritic knees, steroid jab this pm) so borrowed a Tramper scooter at #RSPBPulboroughBrooks this morning.
My balance is shot anyway and using the Tramper meant I could look around as I pootled along, instead of always watching the ground. I saw so much more!

Lovely morning at #RSPBPulboroughBrooks today though there weren’t many birds around. Did get to see (at last!) my first Green Woodpecker of the year, and four Avocets, too. It was sunny, hot and breezy. The best sighting was a Purple Hairstreak.
This Oak was a nice candidate for #thicktrunktuesday

I might have cleared out kitchen cupboards a few times in recent years but this pot of Arnica tablets in an old First Aid pouch escaped me.
Polly got a nasty whack on the arm from a wind-flung car door yesterday. I hunted, sure we had Arnica.
She won’t be taking these!

Thank you! She’s a sable English Show Cocker Spaniel in need of another Summer haircut!

For some reason Kinsey likes her cooling mat under a low table. Move it out, she doesn’t like to use it.
She’s now flaked out on it with an electric fan blowing on her. The only route into the back garden is across hot paving stones, so I’m restricting her wanderings.

I hope no-one walked their dog in the heat of the day in Southern England today, on any pavement-like surface.
My thermometer at 3pm?
Air temp in the sun was 42°C/106°F.
Ground in shade 36°C/96°F.
Ground in sun?
Off the scale but as near as I can make out 52°C/124°F.

I was an “incomer” aged 15. I’ve lived in various Sussex villages and towns during the 60 years since but always feel my adopted county is home, where my heart belongs.
Happy Sussex Day, Rachael!

Been away in rather rainy Dorset for a week. Just collected Kinsey from our friend (with whom we exchange dog-sitting holidays).
So far she’s slept all the journey. Guaranteed the first thing she’ll do when we get home is dash into the garden to suss out fox/cat/hedgehog/mouse visits whilst away!
