Welcome to Kilohana Plantation, Kauai, Hawaii. Formerly a large sugar plantation operated by C and H Sugar, the plantation now serves as an animal refuge and site for vegetation of all types, like the taro growing in photo 1. There’s a little train that takes you around, so everyone can do it.

The mere mention of her name invokes, for me, a shadow animal coursing around the room, the field, the world. A shadow animal at once as small as a flea’s footprint, and as large as a galactic storm. The shadow animal, despite its dark nature, acts as a force of illumination. That is, it draws attention, compels contemplation, reveals things rather than hides them, even if the revelation is of a mystery, a mystery the mind can sense and heart can feel, but never grasp nor pin down like a butterfly to a board. The shadow animal is a shapeshifter, an energetic vortex, a portal, a being who can manifest itself into many beings, or none. Tonight, in this house, as the wind howls across the top of the hill where we live on Addie’s Acres, the shadow animal grows wings, wings that flutter in the corners of this living room, the corners where hardly anyone looks, where the spider webs and dog hair conspire to catch things, and the air stirs, as if a phantom pair of lungs had drawn breath and exhaled. Then the shadow animal enters the walls and groans, groans like the beams of dead but still-existing trees, whose ghosts shelter us against the storms, the groans of a house whose story we populate as pages, chapters, characters come and gone. I trace the wing-flaps from the corners to the fireplace to the floors to the back porch, then the shadow animal slips out the door. I try to follow it across the garden into the family cemetery, but I find I’m following a version of myself. Someone I was before I was born. He tells me to go home, to be warm, to be grateful there is warmth amidst the cold. Grateful but careful. Shivering, my body tells me he is right, so I turn around. When I return to my chair and sip my Christmas port—a ’77 Fonseca, older than I am—I can feel the shadow animal’s breath entwined with mine. Entwined with my ancestor’s too. It’s frightful, but Kelly’s work has taught me to try to retain wonder when I’m afraid—wonder-danger: a keener sense of being alive—so I take another sip to fortify my resolve, and muse. Who is this shadow animal? Who isn’t the question. The question is what. What composes and endures this continuous procession of selves, simultaneously howling and singing and breathing in my breath, this shadow animal that appears then disappears, but still resides?
