#DidYouKnow that the earliest document held by Kent Archives is quite possibly the oldest possessed by any county repository in the United Kingdom? 📜👀

It's a charter issued by King Wihtred granting freedom from taxation to the churches and monasteries of #Kent, AD 699

Today marks the Feast Day of the great Colmcille (St Columba), so for this edition of our free #MonumentMonday newsletter we take a trip to his homeland of Gartan in County Donegal.

Here we encounter a pilgrimage route and a strange stone known as Leac na Cumha, meaning 'the Stone of Sorrow'.

Beltany Stone Circle • Donegal

Set high on a Donegal hilltop with extensive views over the surrounding landscape, Beltany Stone Circle is one of the places most associated with this time of year, as its name is thought to derive from An Bhealtaine.

Gravestone of Peg, “a Negro Serv’t to Henry Bull Esq’r” who died in 1740 at the age of 6. She is buried in Newport, Rhode Island. The stone appears to have been carved sometime around the late 1710s by John Stevens I, and it bears the faint lettering of an old inscription beneath the current one.

This is what makes #landscape #history so entrancing:
generations of anonymous labour recorded in the soil; farmers ploughing & harvesting these fields, they & their animals wearing down the footpath, c.2000yrs ago.
Over a millennium later, shepherds folding their sheep on these abandoned fields.
