The bit where I started enjoying it properly was the timer counting down, but he just sort of abandons it. I'm not finished so I'm guessing it will make a return but it was genuinely mysterious and exciting and he just went "oh that bit is done now"

You can see how he's come up with this idea from the context in which it was written. It's very interesting! I do want to know more as well

It gets noticeably bad in the third part. It was basically ok before then. Or perhaps my tolerance for it ran out. Disappointing.

Gone from somewhat enjoying this (there's one bit that's quite thrilling about 100 pages in that just gets tossed by the wayside) to finding it a terse and "cowards use subtext" slog
