One of the themes in Zohran’s dad’s work is the historic malleability of identity and colonialism’s desire to impose a fixed definition for that identity as a method of control, which is an interesting context for that NYT story.

Saturday Night Live did a Pentagon press conference skit where the joke was reporters asking questions put troops in danger
one of the only "Gen X was like THIS" posts I'll ever do, but my elderly status allows me to say that Gulf War I in 1990-1991 was also infinitely stupid but (1) didn't last long; and (2) no social media. But it was the advent of CNN treating war like a video game, hooray.

Voted early in Brooklyn. It was packed like I’ve never seen for a non-presidential election. Certainly not for local primaries. Zohran supporters are tremendously excited to vote. The only obviously non-Zohran voter there was Chuck Schumer.

NEW: John Chell, the NYPD’s highest-ranking uniformed official, used someone else’s identity in a bid to avoid paying income taxes on money he made while moonlighting as a basketball referee for 6 years, newly-released police disciplinary records reveal.

A lot going on right now but I still think it's crazy that the NY state budget is a week overdue because the governor is holding it hostage to a retrogressive policy demand based on a claim for which neither she nor anyone else have offered *any* supporting evidence. hellgatenyc.com/tisch-cant-s...

The funniest moment in Lebanon's presidential election today: one member of parliament voted for US Senator Bernie Sanders. That prompted Nabih Berri, speaker of the Lebanese parliament, to exclaim, شو؟ - "what?"

Unfortunately, the vote was annulled and expunged from the final tally.

Tim Hunter: We were encouraged to do as much as we could. I will always remember [this] as the llama episode. I’d been driving through Topanga Canyon and seeing llamas, so, I said, can you get me a llama? And I showed up on the set and there was the llama.

Ok, it’s CIA story time, because a great forthcoming book revisits the agency’s role in the assassination of Patrice Lumumba and its extensive deception around that — largely the work of its man in Congo, Larry Devlin, whom the CIA honored during its Torture Era.
CIA Story Time: From Patrice Lumumba's Assassination To Post-9/11 Torture
Before his death in 2008, CIA operator Larry Devlin lamented the persecution of agency interrogators. A forthcoming book sheds light on his role overthrowing Congo's first post-colonial government.

It’s hilarious that Adams had his staff fake the photo when called on his lie instead of just indignantly saying he won’t let reporters dig through his wallet https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/06/nyregion/mayor-adams-photo-venable-fake.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare
The Mayor Had a Photo of a Fallen Officer. Was His Story About It True?
Mayor Eric Adams has often talked about a wrinkled photo of a fallen police officer that he kept in his wallet. Now that photo and the story have been called into question.

Saw the new Fugazi doc and thought about how when I was getting into music and saw live footage, I only wanted to see the band and would get annoyed by crowd shots. Now I love to see who went to shows, who made up the scene in that time and place, in all their awkward glory.

Many Supreme Court opinions are substantively harmful, but Sam Alito’s “consider puddles” charts new territory when it comes to Supreme Court opinions that are ALSO unserious horseshit https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/22pdf/21-454_4g15.pdf
