“No worries, Ms. Clark, we’ll try to get a decision before breakfast, one way or the other. And I apologize again, this isn’t something any of our students are expected to go through.” “Hm, was more thinking that I’ll get lost,” Addison said. They entered a squat but wide building with a gabled roof and thin tall windows along its front. Inside was parquet flooring and about twenty or thirty separate school desks, the occasional burn mark or dent on them. Giant cabinets had open shelves stuffed with books and tiny statuettes. To their left, sitting in a circle of chairs next to the unoccupied teacher’s desk, were Professor Hayes, Abbott, and that new, bearded guy, Pittman, who always looked disgruntled. Addison hesitantly joined in on a free chair. It felt like a tribunal. Professor Hayes smiled. “You seem to be feeling better. Good.” Addison shrugged. Fidgeting her wrinkly fingers, Professor Abbott said, “This isn’t the safest idea. It really isn’t.” “We talked about this,” Professor Coleman-Hunt said. “They were adamant she had already managed it.” Professor Abbott crossed her short legs. She was wearing dark robe. “What if they were somehow mistaken?”

After we were sitting there on the bus for a while, Alice felt this overwhelming urge to apologize for essentially ending my relationship. She tried to ignore it, but every time she looked at me, she felt guilty. "I'm... I'm sorry." Alice said softly. "For what?" I asked her. "Well he... he broke up with you." Alice said. "No, I should be thankin' you for that." I laughed a bit. "I've wanted that relationship to end for months. I'm glad I didn't have to do it." "Oh." Alice nodded. "Okay.” Great, I apologized for no reason. She thought. Why did I even apologize anyway? Why do I care how she feels? This makes no sense. "Plus, it probably wouldn't have worked out, regardless." I told her. "He was religious if you couldn't tell, and he reminds me of my mother with how devoted he was. That's not for me. I don't believe in that shit." She doesn't believe in God, either? "Why were you with him then?" Alice asked. "Because I thought he was cool? I guess?" I said, then laughed a bit again. "I don't know really, he hit on me first, he's not even really my type. Just figured it would be nice to have someone, you know? I had never been in a relationship before him."

"And so, you called me a 'demon child' for burnin' the people that hurt us, for sayin' I don't believe in God, and for sayin' I wanna marry a woman." Alice said coldly. "How very sistaly of you." "Okay, you're right!" Priscilla said. "I know." Alice said. "I meant about the last two." Priscilla cut back in. "You have different beliefs, and you aren't attracted to men. I shouldn'ta faulted you for that. I'm sorry. However, you should never have burnt down the Liddell house. We could have just left, Alice! We could have just organized an escape and left!" "And then two rapists and their oblivious mother and wife would still be runnin' free." Alice said without thinking, which shocked her a bit. That was the closest to saying what happened to her she's ever gotten. "And where would we go, huh?" "There were other ways to deal with that!" Priscilla hissed, trying not to raise her voice. "And I don't know, but we coulda found somewhere! Anywhere!" "What other ways?" Alice shot back. "Ain't nobody care about us! Nobody gon' listen to two runaway niggers who were supposed to be free and settled into society months ago! Hell, nobody gon' listen to us niggers, period! The only justice we can get for what happened to us is by exterminatin' them all! They all bad! They ain't no place for us until they all dead!" Priscilla scoffed, and left Alice's room with tears in her eyes. Alice would admit - the last part was an over-exaggeration on her part. She was never planning on exterminating all white people. However, the effect it had on Priscilla was worth the white lie, or what she considered a white lie. However, what Alice would never admit is that she was hoping Priscilla was coming to apologize to her. She was hoping that Priscilla wasn't so mortified of what she did to the Liddells. She was hoping that they would make up and go back to the good relationship they once had. Alice was hoping to have her other older sister again.

“Why don’t you take in the view, Jessica?” Alex gestured toward the window beside him, his voice calm—too calm. Jessica leaned toward the glass. From this height, the world was insignificant. Below, crooked houses sprawled in chaos—mismatched, unorganized. Like different liquids in a mixing cauldron. “What do you see?” he asked. “The slums?” “Exactly.” Alex jabbed a finger toward the mess of houses. “Look, Jess. Poor people. The perfect breeding ground for parasites like you to thrive.” He stomped against the epoxy floor. “Step on them, like you always have.” Jessica’s skin prickled as Alex pressed a finger beneath her chin, tilting her face upward until her gaze met the sky. “Use them as pillars.” he whispered. “Climb higher. Reach out for the stars.” He moved behind her, thumb digging into the back of her skull. “Just make sure you don’t trip.” Alex pressed harder, tilting her head downward. He whistled a long, descending note, like something plummeting from orbit. As the chaotic sprawl of rooftops rushed back into view, his whistle ended with a sudden splash— a body hitting water. “And smack your face against a puddle of piss.”

It’s been through a lot but it’s still standing.
There are plenty of symbols used by the Dominion I was never really aware of beyond the omnipresent triangle, representing the mountain they trace their history back to. I’m a little surprised the currently presiding keepers of the name Nayre, with origins among the valley-dwelling Welkandic people, didn’t contest that at all, but what do I know? That hardly matters though, because today’s important symbol is the bumblebee. Though rare on Paliputra, overshadowed by the firefly which thrives much better in the 15-hour twilight and 15-hour dead of night, their metaphorical significance stands. Tiny but mighty, industrious and beautiful, they may produce no honey but they provide an indispensable service to all ecosystems holding space for them. With that in mind, hidden behind the concrete and boreal kudzu, the hive-like architecture spanning the interior of the tower makes a little more sense. The golden glow intended for this place is broken by the blackened, ruinous void in its side, left there by the bombs, but repairs are already underway. The dreamy purple of fading sunlight just barely illuminates the cataract-white of the tarp secured there, too dim to cast the shadow of the net below.

Alice absentmindedly walks back to the rabbit hole, on the verge of tears. She was upset, but she was also angry. Watching how my mother glorified this man who had hurt her, and watching her guest inadvertently slander her for taking a stand against her oppression. And with every footstep she took, she got angrier and angrier at my mother and me (and my brother, though I think her anger stopped her from realizing that I wasn't an only child for a while) for being able to exist. For being able to thrive while she would have never had a chance at a regular life just because she was Black, and we weren't - and Alice didn't realize that I'm Black as well, though I'm not sure it would've made much of a difference then.

He was, in all fairness, nearly twice the height of Halulinael. He idly thought to himself that he’d probably stick out among all the hhunromar in a similar - if less grandiose - way to how the Yirlae stuck out among the canopy of Lazrulae. (The word "thrived" is highlighted in a sandy sort of orange-red tone.)
