Chris Grey calls out Labour's stupidity accurately. 🧵 ⬇️
Everything about the current 'debate' around this is dismal, not just morally but because it is so stupid. For example:

It conflates asylum-seeking and illegal immigration (and sometimes with migration generally)

It shows no understanding of why there is AS

Asylum system in UK ‘out of control’ and dividing country, home secretary says
Shabana Mahmood to unveil new proposals modelled on Denmark’s controversial system

In order to counter Reform lies and propaganda, the government could have given people facts and defended the asylum and refugee system. Instead they've joined a populist race to the bottom. It'd be shameful for any government, but for a Labour one, it's disgusting.
This is as bad as anything proposed by Reform.

Leaving refugees in permanent limbo and unable to build a new life in the UK would be a complete abdication of our humanitarian responsibilities

UK set to limit refugees to temporary stays
Shabana Mahmood is expected to say the era of permanent protection for refugees is over, in major changes to the UK's asylum and immigration system.

I want to see Turtle Island be a home to sane governance again, and this is a real key part. Some form of recall that goes into effect once there's evidence of corruption. Actual enforceable ethics agreements. And banning anyone from having a billion dollars because that's what got us here...

This is disgusting, goes against every principle this Republic has stood for since Washington by pushing political partisanship to active duty military on a weekly basis, & is what authoritarians do. It is why so many turned out today. Republicans in Congress are complicit. bsky.app/profile/acyn...
Vance: Trump wanted me to tell each and every one of you despite the Schumer shutdown, he will do everything he can to make sure you get paid exactly as you deserve. Democrats seem to want to keep the government shutdown even though it would mean a lot if you would not get your paycheck

Let’s check in on the paramilitary secret police…who seem to be attacking an inflatable frog.
Just arrived on the scene at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in South Portland. Here less than 10 minutes when agents charged out of the facility and used a pale yellow gas that caused tears and coughing in crowd members. Also shot munitions at those retreating.

The latest AP-NORC poll had Trump at 37% approval, but, sure, lean into Trump-is-King. Good idea.

MAGA really doesn't know how to think about anything except to take the opposite position of their enemies, real or perceived.
Really think the biggest win today aside from just numbers is negatively polarizing the regime of 12-year-olds into fully adopting #YESKINGS as their official stance.

It is a scandal totally unprecedented in history that the Vice President has shared a video depicting the President as king. It’s an obscene violation of every founding American principle.

And nothing will come of it. It makes me physically sick.

Again, if you live in Portland, just strolling around the city to verify the (checks notes) existence of store windows would do wonders for counteracting the delusions of President Livia Soprano.
Trump: "I don't know what could be worse than Portland. You don't even have stores anymore. They don't even put glass up. They put plywood on their windows."

Trump’s weakness creates huge openings for a whole series of unelected figures whose main difference consists in having different motives and methods of wrecking the government.
For all intents and purposes, the most powerful person in the federal government is Stephen Miller, not the President.
The Deputy Chief of Staff... is in charge of military strikes? Do we even have a president?

It is important to see this sort of straight talking, precisely because of the executive order last week that conflated criticism of the government with terrorism.
Pritzker: "In any other country, if federal agents fired upon journalists & protesters when unprovoked what would we call it? If officials marched down streets harassing civilians & demanding their papers, what would we say? I don't think we'd have trouble calling it what it is: authoritarianism"

Reform losing their shit over being told their policies are racist, so maybe they are too.
What are you then?
Cos ‘legitimate concerns’ don’t stretch to violent threats against immigrants, mass deportations or demanding British people be white.
You’re whiny racists. Don’t blame us for your shame.

Seriously. A one-hour Party Political Broadcast. Followed at the top of the next hour with top story billing and a highlights package.

Exactly how will this be "balanced" across their coverage?

Where is Ofcom? Where is Nandy?
For 56 minutes Sky News and BBC News interrupted everything else and carried a Reform UK feed live, uninterrupted, unchallenged. The stream spluttered, froze, pixelated - dozens of times - still they stuck with it. FOR ONE HOUR.

This is an editorial choice. No other party gets this coverage. ~AA
