The Trump administration is taking unprecedented actions to steer the power grid away from clean energy and toward more fossil fuels, like reversing Michigan’s plan to retire an aging power plant, forcing it to remain open and continue burning coal.

Tomorrow we begin to learn how deep a hole the country is in 😬.

We’ll know a lot more once we see the Day 1 Executive Orders, and if the mass roundup of immigrants kicks off this week.

One good bet - price of eggs is not going down.

Good luck to us all.

Clearly, *something* has changed. In reality, many things have changed. Far more people today live in high fire risk zones than ever before. We removed beneficial fires (both natural ignitions & cultural burning) from the landscape. The climate has warmed, and the West has dried.

While we're praying for the success of the firefighters and witnessing the grief of families losing so much to this catastrophe, we should also look at the forests and wild animals. There's photographic evidence of how much things have changed in 100 years: treesource.org/news/lands/f...

This TedXABQ talk I gave 9 years ago on AI for risk and resource analysis is sadly just as relevant now. We’ve made tremendous progress on the monitoring and alerting technology - but the climate and resource risks are still getting worse …

Sadly accurate. There is also an *urgent* need to reimagine and reform management of natural land. Forests are now heavily overgrown and dangerously unhealthy after a century of small fire suppression and removal of native species: herbivores to manage the trees, predators to manage the herbivores.
“Elected officials, the fire service, the insurance industry, needs to let folks know,” Ms. Steinberg said. “You say, ‘There’s not a way — in a major event, in a very extreme wildfire — that we can do anything for you. You just need to know that.’”
